Spiced Rum Cocktails To Transport You To The Caribbean
Spiced rum is the perfect liquor for a warming, flavorful cocktail, especially on a chilly winter evening. What Is Spiced Rum
Spiced Rum is a distilled alcoholic beverage, and is one of the best variations of regular rum. It is 80-proof, darker in color, with about 86 calories in one shot. The drink gets its flavor, and the dark color from the spices added to it, and often from caramel .

How To Spice Rum At Home
Not only is it possible to spice your own rum at home, it’s also even easier than you’d think. As you may have gleaned from the previous section, there’s a decent chance you already have what you need sitting in your spice rack. There are a few different rum-spicing recipes floating around, which seem to incorporate things like allspice berries, cloves, cinnamon, vanilla beans, nutmeg, orange peels, and cardamom. Of course, most of the fun to be had when infusing your own rum comes from experimentation, and there are certainly worse things to learn to make by trial and error.
Ideally, you’ll want to use 750ml of a moderately aged rum. Adding spices won’t magically turn a light rum into a dark rum, but you don’t want anything that’s aged long enough for the oakiness to really seep in, as it means you’re not working with a blank canvas. From there, it’s all about combining the ingredients with your rum in an airtight, lidded jar, making sure to scrape the seeds away from your vanilla bean before both components are added in. Then, shake and store somewhere that won’t get too much direct sunlight.
Based on what you read earlier about how long rum is aged, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to learn that it only takes two days for your homemade infusion to properly mature. Once those 48 hours are up, pour the whole thing into a new bottle and you’re good to go.

Schweppes Muscovado Dark Spirit Mixer
The next one I want to showcase Ive been banging on about this for the best part of two years now and it’s still unheard of. Its amazing this is Schweppes 1783 Muscovado Dark Spirit Mixer. It does exactly what it says on the Tin. It’s meant to go with all kind of dark spirits. I absolutely love it with rum. Most supermarkets will sell the cans, in packs of six. They’re on offer now two pounds, but normally two pound fifty for six cans. Absolutely amazing. Clues in the title, its got that Muscovado kind of got that Sugary, Dark Brown Sugary taste. I absolutely, my favourite serves with this now, is kind of like a Pineapple Rum the Pineapple and the Muscovado just works exceptionally well. But if you like drinks like Mai Tais and things like that, you can kind of lengthen it out with that, but just try it, try it with just rum, Muscovado, maybe a wedge of lime or something like that, absolutely cracking. It’s in every supermarket, go and get some now.

Fever Tree Spiced Orange Ginger Ale
The third one I want to show you is a fever trees a Spiced Orange Ginger Ale. Its been out a very long time, but, apparently, I heard the other day they stopped making it for a while. I dont know whether thats true. There is another one in the range as well. Its the Smoky Ginger Ale, but the one I want to focus on, its the Spiced Orange, because the flavour profile of that goes amazing with a Rum and Spiced Rum. Very delicate. Its not as fiery in ginger, as Ginger beer or anything like that. Just the subtle twist of orange coming through. I know a few people to drink this with whiskey as well. But for me, its out and out rum. Again anything, even stuff for your Rums, like your Appletons, their Signature Blends, your Mount Gays those sort of style of Rums. Plantation right through to some of the Spiced Rums as well. Its just the catch all. Absolutely love it. Morrisons, apparently at the time of filming, Morrisons have now got the 500ml bottles. These bottles, youll be able to get from most wholesalers. They will all carry them now. So that is a Fever Trees spiced Orange ginger ale.
Absolute Best Drinks To Mix With Rum
When we think of rum mixers, chances are tropical concoctions are the first to come to mind. If we aren’t mixing rum with something fruity , we’re probably mixing it with the standard cola. But there’s so much more you can do with rum without breaking out the blender.
Liquor.com says, while rum is made from sugar, the taste isn’t always super sweet. White rum can be on the dry side, while a dark rum can have a woody flavor similar to scotch. Some rums can be mixed with those tropical fruits and lots of ice, while others are best simply stirred with one or two ingredients to enhance the spirit’s flavor.
What this comes down to is this: rum is far more versatile than we may give it credit for, and can be used with plenty of different mixers some of which you may not have even thought to try in the past. To help get the inspiration flowing, we’ve created a list of the best drinks to mix with rum for your sipping pleasure.

Sekforde Light & Spiced Rum Mixer
The fourth one I want to show you is this. This is relatively unheard of. This is Sekforde Light and Spiced Rum Mixer. Waitrose are the main ones on your high streets that you can get this from. I think there’s three, if not four in the range. There’s one for bourbon. One for Tequila. And one for Gin as well. Absolutely amazing. Really love this. The flavour is Lime, Mint Rose and Cacao. I’m just going to read you the back. The tasting notes on the bottle. Lime and green herbs give a sophisticated edge to the rounded sweetness of a good rum. The finish is lengthened with Ecuadorian cacao bitters and lifted with a hint of mint. Now I absolutely love this with a lighter rum. Not necessarily Spiced Rums. I haven’t really played too much about with it with Spiced Rum yet. But lighter rums, Plantation Three Stars, Havana Club 3yo, lengthen, instead of Soda in a Mojito. It just lengthens that out to give it a whole new twist. Absolutely cracking £1.50 from Waitrose. Go and try them now. I’m gonna start using this a bit more. I’m gonna get a few more bottles and start using this with the Spiced Rum, because I don’t use this in the tasting as I do for the Spiced Drums. But for the lighter rums, I absolutely love it. It’s gorgeous. Very kind of different to what you’re used to. Is very different to these. But, Sekforde Light and Spiced rum mixer drink.
What Is A Good Mix With Spiced Rum
Although it’s hard to go wrong with this spiced liquor, there are certain mixers that go especially well with its warm, vanilla flavor. Coca-cola, like in a classic rum and coke, is a go-to that blends perfectly with the flavors of spiced rum. Ginger beer and apple cider are also popular choices, both of which bring out the flavors of spiced rum.
For a fruitier cocktail, pineapple juice or orange juice bring to mind the tropical island where Captain Jack was stranded with his beloved rum. On the other hand, lemonade is summery and tart, ideal for a spiced rum cocktail on a hot summer’s day. Iced tea is also a great choice to mix with spiced rum.
To get really creative, you can even take your fruity cocktail experience a step further by infusing fruit with rum. To do this, simply think of what your favorite fruity mixers are with rum and go from there. If you love rum and pineapple juice, infuse pineapple slices with rum for a boozy treat. Coconut with rum is another classic that we’re sure any pirates would appreciate.

How Is Rum Made
Compared to some other spirits of the world defined by strictly-regimented production methods, there’s no one universally proscribed way to make rum. That lack of standardization may have something to do with the fact that it’s a product of the West Indies, as different islands have their own way of doing things when it comes to rum. Puerto Rico keeps things light, for example, while Jamaica is more associated with aged rum produced with help from something called “dunder.”
Molasses, a byproduct of the sugarcane refining process, is a fairly essential ingredient no matter what rum you’re working with, but even that’s not a universal necessity. Sugarcane juice sometimes takes its place when traditional sugar refining methods aren’t possible. Sugarcane juice more commonly forms the basis of rum in France’s former Carribbean territories. Down in Brazil, fermented sugarcane juice makes a slightly different but equally wonderful spirit called cachaça.

Rum distillation begins in earnest when water and yeast is added to that molasses or sugarcane juice, which helps kickstart the fermentation process. The specific yeast employed at this phase is the earliest point of divergence between what will become light and dark rums: Lighter rums are often associated with “faster” yeasts, while more fuller-flavored rums tend to be associated with “slow” yeasts. However, it’s worth noting that the yeast itself doesn’t lend a rum its particular color.
