Woodford Reseve Master’s Collection: Batch Proof 2020 Whiskey Review! Breaking the Seal Ep#108

Every year Woodford Reserve has released one time only Masters Collection bottle blended by Master Distiller Chris Morris. As the 2016 offering, fully matured Woodford Reserve was finished for two additional years in used brandy barrels, hence the name Brandy Cask Finish. According to Brown-Forman, brandy, a spirit distilled from wine or fruit, is often aged in oak barrels. Unlike bourbon, brandy does not have the new, charred barrel requirement allowing their barrels to be used multiple times. Therefore, this release is technically not bourbon but rather a finished whiskey. Now that we have some back story on the spirit, lets get a glass and indulge.

As the liquid hits the glass, you can see its rich, dark burgundy brownish color which tells you the barrel has imprinted itself onto the bourbon. Once I bring the glass up to my nose, I am met with a bouquet of aromatic pleasantries. I smell fig, dark cherry, oak and chocolate immediately.

I then proceed to swish it around the glass in a rapid manner and try nosing it again to see if there is more upon the second attempt. Low and behold, there is more The glass is releasing fresh baked apples and cinnamon like an All-American pie. I am now intrigued to see if it will taste as good as it smells.

Woodford Reserve Masters Collection Brandy Finish 700ml 452%

The Brandy Cask Finish is the first whiskey to be finished in ex-American brandy cask. Brandy is often aged in oak barrels and these can be used a number of times because brandy doesnt have the new, charred barrel requirement that Kentucky Bourbon does. Finishing fully-matured Woodford Reserve in these barrels dont add any new flavours to the whiskey, but it accentuates the rich dried fruit and nut characteristics that come from the grain recipe and long fermentation process.

Woodford Reserve Masters Collection Brandy Finish Tasting Notes

    Color: Deep amber

Nose: Sweet vanilla, milk chocolate, and caramel open the nose, along with rich, sweet fruit like raisin, dried cranberry, and preserved black cherry. A substantial, sort of dry oak note lingers throughout, along with a touch of warm spice.

Palate: Theres more fruit on the palate, but its more on the juicy red sidethink ripe cherry and plum. Vanilla, honey, and caramel follow, along with nuts, then a nice spicy clove

Macallan 18 Review: Is It Worth The Price

The Macallan distillery roots are deep and date back almost 200 years. The Macallan 18 is iconic and the Bank of Scotland has issued banknotes featuring the Macallan stills. Its commonly thought of as a premium whisky, directly competing with Johnnie Walkers Blue Label.

Along with the Macallan 18, you may also want to try the Macallan 12, Macallan 25, or the Macallan 30. Its nestled nicely in the middle, balancing price with exceptional taste. If youre interested in trying a whisky, this one is a great choice for beginners and experienced whisky drinkers alike.

If you are looking for a luxury scotch we DEFINITELY recommend the Macallan 18. It truly is a must-try pick that youll want to keep enjoying from the first sip to the very last drop! Full-bodied and flavourful with a long balanced finish. Worth every penny!

    Why Is Macallan Expensive

Macallan uses premium ingredients. It starts with the barley thats specially grown for the Macallan Distillery and ends with the aging barrels. The barley itself costs about 30-40% more than other whiskies. Because it costs more to make, it costs more to purchase, but its well worth the investment for the consistent quality they produce.

Woodford Reserve Masters Collection Brandy Cask Finish is a brandy barrel-finished bourbon whiskey and the 11th expression in Woodford Reserve’s Annual Masters Collection. Its mature Woodford Reserve bourbon, finished in ex-brandy barrels. The Woodford Reserve distillery is careful to point out that the additional ageing in used barrels means this is technically finished whiskey, not bourbon. As they put it, brandy, a spirit distilled from wine or fruit, is often aged in oak barrels. Unlike bourbon, brandy does not have the new, charred barrel requirement allowing their barrels to be used multiple times. Therefore, this release is technically not a bourbon but rather a finished whiskey.

Review: Woodford Reserve Masters Collection Brandy Cask Finish

The 11th installment in Woodford Reserves annual Masters Collection release is here. For 2016, standard, fully mature Woodford is finished in American brandy casks for nearly two years. Which brandy isnt stated .

Woodford notes, Brandy, a spirit distilled from wine or fruit, is often aged in oak barrels. Unlike bourbon, brandy does not have the new, charred barrel requirement allowing their barrels to be used multiple times. Therefore, this release is technically not a bourbon but rather a finished whiskey. Thats really splitting hairs, though. Finishing barrels have become quite popular in bourbon country in recent years , and the use of one does not, in my mind, disqualify this from being called a bourbon.

And in fact, there is nothing at all not to like in the 2016 Masters Collection bourbon. Fresh from the start, the nose is moderately woody, tempered by light chocolate, cinnamon , and plenty of lightly scorched caramel. Some raisin and dried fig notes come forward with time. On the tongue, the whiskey quickly settles into a beautifully balanced groove. Notes of raisin, ripe banana, and gingerbread wash over a spicy, vanilla- and caramel-heavy core. As a reprise, some gentle wood notes bring up the rear, a nice callback to the way things started.

Morris has stumbled upon a really magical combination here. It may be the best Masters Collection release to date.

    90.4 proof.

    What Makes Macallan Special

Macallan is known across the globe for producing excellent whisky and doing so consistently. They set the example for what a single malt Scotch should be. The aging process gives it balance and character, making it recognizable as a Macallan.Macallan is unique because they produce consistent quality better than most other manufacturers youll find today. Despite their large production, theyve stayed true to this quality throughout. In fact, many people think of a distillery like Macallan that produces the volume they do to be a corporate bottling facility with the bottom dollar on their mind. However, Macallan has always put quality above production numbers, and in doing so, have been able to achieve success in both.
