It may surprise you to learn that some of these whiskeys have not obtained the legal right to be addressed as Tennessee whisky. This is because back in 2013, according to state law, Tennessee whiskey is defined as a spirit that is distilled in Tennessee from not less than 51 percent corn, and must be aged in new, charred oak barrels after it has undergone the LCP , i.e., filtering the freshly-made spirit through several layers of charcoal before barreling for aging purposes.
An exception to this state law, however, was made for Benjamin Prichards, who preferred producing Tennessee whiskeys that do not go through the charcoal filtration process. The legislation was backed in full by Jack Daniels Distillery, but other distilleries notably Diageo, the owner of George Dickel were vehemently against it. They argued that the state law limits their ability to innovate during the creation of what they consider as a Tennessee whiskey.

LYNCHBURG, Tenn. Every year, about 275,000 people tour the Jack Daniels distillery here, and as they stroll through its brick buildings nestled in a tree-shaded hollow, they hear a story like this: Sometime in the 1850s, when Daniel was a boy, he went to work for a preacher, grocer and distiller named Dan Call. The preacher was a busy man, and when he saw promise in young Jack, he taught him how to run his whiskey still and the rest is history.
This year is the 150th anniversary of Jack Daniels, and the distillery, home to one of the worlds best-selling whiskeys, is using the occasion to tell a different, more complicated tale. Daniel, the company now says, didnt learn distilling from Dan Call, but from a man named Nearis Green one of Calls slaves.
This version of the story was never a secret, but it is one that the distillery has only recently begun to embrace, tentatively, in some of its tours, and in a social media and marketing campaign this summer.
Its taken something like the anniversary for us to start to talk about ourselves, said Nelson Eddy, Jack Daniels in-house historian.
Frontier history is a gauzy and unreliable pursuit, and Nearis Greens story built on oral history and the thinnest of archival trails may never be definitively proved. Still, the decision to tell it resonates far beyond this small city.

Who Originally Sang Tennessee Whiskey
David Allan Coe originally sang Tennessee Whiskey. It was first released in 1981 by outlaw artist David Allan Coe. Hall of Fame songwriter Dean Dillon co-wrote Tennessee Whiskey with Linda Hargrove in the early 80s, after a night together at Nashvilles Bluebird Cafe.
It was 4 oclock in the morning, and I had been drinking all night, and I met a young lady by the name of Linda Hargrove, and we decided to go home togetherbut not for what everybody thought, Dillon told Nash Country Daily. I had the idea for the song, and we sat at her house at 4 oclock in the morning and wrote that song. And the rest is history.
The song was actually first pitched to George Strait but turned it down. David Allan Coe was the first country singer to cut the song and made it the title song of an album he released in 1981. Tennessee Whiskey by David Allan Coe was so strong that even it alone could get you drunk!
However, David Allan Coes Tennessee Whiskey didnt top the charts, it only peaked at No. 77 on Billboards Hot Country Songs chart. Two years later, George Jones released his own rendition of the song, and it was a major hit, reaching all the way to No. 2 on the Hot Country Singles chart.

Do You Know Who Owns Your Favorite Liquor
The new rules sparked a battle between two Tennessee whiskey titans: Brown-Forman Corp., the company behind Jack Daniel’s, and Diageo PLC, the conglomerate that owns George Dickel.
Jack Daniel’s people lobbied heavily for the law, which they say helps guard against knockoff, lower-quality alcohol. Diageo, meanwhile, argued that it would make whiskey-makers dependent on the supply of new barrels, The Associated Press reports, and would hurt craft distillers who want to test out new recipes for the spirit.
Diageo launched a legislative effort this spring attempting to overturn the rules. In March, some lawmakers proposed simply tweaking the law to allow the use of reused barrels. Both repeal and reform failed to pass.
Fast-forward to June, when the state and Diageo resolved a second squabble this time about where aging happens.
A 1937 law requires that all spirits made in Tennessee be aged in Tennessee, no more than a county away from the place they were manufactured.
State attorneys in Nashville complained that the George Dickel distillery had moved barrels of whiskey outside the state, into neighboring Kentucky, for aging which would violate the 1937 law. Diageo promptly sued the state, alleging that the law was unconstitutional. They also pointed out that this was the first time the state had actually enforced the law suspiciously soon after Dickel protested the state’s newer rules.

Sweetens Cove Tennessee Bourbon Whiskey
This is a new Tennessee whiskey release that is also a sports celebrity endeavor inspired by drinking on the golf links. Peyton Manning, Andy Roddick and Jim Nantz are all behind the brand and they hired Marianne Eaves, who previously worked for Brown-Forman and Castle & Key, to blend the whiskey. Its a sourced bourbon aged for 13 years and bottled at cask strength of 101.4 proof. This is an expensive bottle, priced at $200, so youre certainly paying a premium here for the names behind it as you can find similar whiskey available for less. But its a deep, rich dram with big flavors on the palate, appropriately oaky given its age. Eaves used just 100 barrels for this release, setting aside four of them as single barrel expressions. Look for a new expression from Sweetens Cove this April, as well as broader distribution and a larger release than the original 14,000-bottle launch.
Creative Freedom Of Flavour
But what about the extra maturation in maple casks? Thinking about these non-oakcasks, the Jim Beam Distiller’s Masterpiece comes to mind. It is a Kentucky Straight Bourbon that has been finished in Spanish Pedro Ximénez Sherry casks. If finishes are possible in Kentucky and Tennessee, is the notion that Bourbon must only be matured in American white oak wrong?
Indeed, the Bourbon Act only states that Bourbon must be matured in fresh American white oakcasks for at least two years. It does not say what you can or should do with the Whiskey afterwards. Here the creativity of the Whiskey producers comes into play
