What To Do With Spiced Rum

What Is The Difference Between Rum And Spiced Rum

Kraken Spiced Rum Review – Kraken Rum Review | What to mix with Spiced Rum Drinks

There are different types of rum, but spiced rum is technically not one of them. Spiced rum is more of a blend recipe its commonly made from gold rum but cheaper varieties typically use white rum and just add caramel coloring later. Different brands use different spices and different procedures to make their formula unique.

Its easy to understand why spiced rum was frowned upon by OG rum enthusiasts in the past. To them, the strong, spice-enhanced, and sweet flavors of spiced rum overpower the natural characteristics that we love about good ole rum. Fortunately, because of continued experimentation in bars and at home, the fondness for spiced rum has grown significantly since.

What Can I Do With Spiced Rum

It was my birthday last week, and the guy I work with bought me a big old bottle of Cap Morgans Spiced Rum.

What should I drink it with? I know coke is the obvious answer, but I asked a buddy of mine and he suggested fresh pineapple juice, which I am eagerly going to buy on Monday.

Any other suggestions as to good drinks I can make with it? Cheers!

Besides your basic soda mixes, rum is used to make mojito’s, mai tai’s and cuba Libre’s. Search for a mojito recipe that uses spiced rum and learn how to make that.

Ladies love mojitos.

If you like white russians, you can make that drink and variations on it using rum instead of vodka. I enjoy the drink and like it with rum too.

Put some lime in it, ice, done. Seriously. Suggestions above are also good if that’s too alcohol-y.

It’s usually used as a mixer so with cola’s. I like it with pineapple juice and a splash of lime juice myself.

I like to drink Captain Morgans straight. I also enjoy it with cola. Haven’t had it with much else to be honest. That pineapple sure does sound good though.

Usually I like a darker rum but you can easily make a painkiller! Pineapple Juice, Orange Juice, Cream of Coconut and a bit of Nutmeg. It’s my husbands favorite.

Now, another thing that goes great with spiced rum is that cherry vanilla Dr. Pepper. It’s delightful.

Can’t believe no one has mentioned having it with dry and lime.

Homemade Rum Vs Mulled Wine

This spiced rum recipe is similar to Mulled Wine except it packs more of a punch. Have you tried Mulled Wine yet? If not, you should! And then you should try this Homemade Spiced Rum. Youre going to be a regular alcohol making aficionado! Think of all the cooking and cocktails you can get going with this special treat. Youll be in business in no time.

Of all the recipes Ive made over the years , this one might be Pats favorite. HA! It has to be one of the best spiced rum recipes out there!

Whats So Special About Spiced Rum Compared To Other Drinks

Spiced rum is a very versatile spirit. One can enjoy spiced rum on its own or with a wide range of cocktails, both hot and cold. Brands incorporate spiced rum into their expressions, often using botanicals and flavors that capture the flavor of where its made.

The appeal of spiced rum and in some cases, the hate towards it comes from its ability to mask the essence of rum. A lot of people enjoy rum with strong vanilla, caramel, and cinnamon flavors, even to a point where rum can no longer be discernible. But for others, thats an abomination. The good thing is that there are now some higher quality spiced rums you can get hold of where the spice isn’t there to completely mask the alcohol.

How To Spice Rum At Home

How to Make Hot Buttered Rum

Not only is it possible to spice your own rum at home, it’s also even easier than you’d think. As you may have gleaned from the previous section, there’s a decent chance you already have what you need sitting in your spice rack. There are a few different rum-spicing recipes floating around, which seem to incorporate things like allspice berries, cloves, cinnamon, vanilla beans, nutmeg, orange peels, and cardamom. Of course, most of the fun to be had when infusing your own rum comes from experimentation, and there are certainly worse things to learn to make by trial and error.

Ideally, you’ll want to use 750ml of a moderately aged rum. Adding spices won’t magically turn a light rum into a dark rum, but you don’t want anything that’s aged long enough for the oakiness to really seep in, as it means you’re not working with a blank canvas. From there, it’s all about combining the ingredients with your rum in an airtight, lidded jar, making sure to scrape the seeds away from your vanilla bean before both components are added in. Then, shake and store somewhere that won’t get too much direct sunlight.

Based on what you read earlier about how long rum is aged, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to learn that it only takes two days for your homemade infusion to properly mature. Once those 48 hours are up, pour the whole thing into a new bottle and you’re good to go.

What Spices Are In Spiced Rum

The aforementioned caramel does play a role, but the specific combination of spices that go into mass market rums are often a closely-guarded secret. Captain Morgan doesn’t give away their recipe for their Original Spiced Gold offering, but they do admit that it features hints of rich vanilla, brown sugar , and “warming spices with just the hint of oak.”

Much like how there’s no one way to make rum, there’s no universal law for how it should be spiced. Aromatics like anise, cloves, and cardamom can often enter the mix, while other more common spices like cinnamon, peppercorns, and nutmeg may appear. Fruits also have a role to play, with certain homemade spiced rum preparations calling for orange as well.

Taste notes: This is spicier than many rums and has an undeniable heat. The undertones of caramelised fruit and brown sugar in both the taste and smell of this rum make it a decadent, almost dessert-like drink with a firm kick.

I don’t know whether that’s true. There is another one in the range as well. It’s the Smoky Ginger Ale, but the one I want to focus on, it’s the Spiced Orange, because the flavour profile of that goes amazing with a Rum and Spiced Rum. Very delicate. Its not as fiery in ginger, as Ginger beer or anything like that. Just the subtle twist of orange coming through. I know a few people to drink this with whiskey as well.
