Bourbon whiskey is a type of American whiskey that is a barrel-aged distilled liquor made mainly from corn. The name comes from the French Bourbon dynasty, although it is still debated till today whether the Kentucky county or New Orleans Street inspired this whiskey’s name. Bourbon has been produced since the 18th century, but the name “Bourbon” was not used until the 1850s. You can find this liquor being made anywhere in the United States, but bourbon is strongly identified with the American South in general, and Kentucky in particular.

Bourbon has a long ageing process that allows for that great flavor you love. After maturing the bourbon in the process, the bourbon is taken from the barrel and usually diluted with water. The bourbon is then bottled to at least 80 US proof. Some higher-proof bottles are marketed as “barrel proof”, which means that they have not been diluted or have been only lightly diluted after removal from the barrels. Bourbon whiskey may be sold at less than 80 proof but must be labeled as “diluted bourbon”.

Bourbon can be served neat, diluted with water, over ice cubes, or mixed with juice or soda into delicious bourbon cocktails, including the Manhattan, the Old Fashioned, the whiskey sour, and the mint julep. Bourbon can also used in cooking. Buy whiskey online and use this versatile bourbon for many different things. Get out that bottle of bourbon for any occasion.

The flavor profile runs along exactly the same lines as the scent, with just the one exception. Once its off your nostrils and on your tongue, the woody side turns a bit dry. That dryness runs into a soft-but-spicy finish. Overall, its balanced, flavorful and somewhat sophisticated. Its an outstanding example of how much you can get out of a middle aged wheated bourbon. It is still over-hunted and over-hyped , but perhaps not actually overrated.

This 12 year wheated Bourbon, is made at the Buffalo Trace Distillery. It is same exact recipe as Pappy van Winkle, except aged slightly differently. The Weller whiskeys have been affectionately known as The Poor Mans Pappy. Extremely hard to find, Extremely well made Bourbon.

Wheated bourbon” is bourbon with wheat as the predominant grain in the mash bill after corn. Traditionally, rye takes that second billing. This 12 year-old whiskey is referred to by some as the “poor man’s Pappy”. With the exception of the 23 Year Pappy Van Winkle which still has some Stitzel-Weller juice in it, all Pappy and Weller bourbons use the Buffalo Trace wheated mash bill. The main difference will be in the barrel management.

W.L. Weller 12 Year Old

In my mind, nothing has ever quite encapsulated the hot house absurdities of the ongoing Bourbon Boom quite so much as W.L. Weller 12 Year Old. I think of it that way because of how it went from being a largely overlooked bourbon to a chimera overnight, and all because the late Josh Ozersky wrote a piece in 2014 labeling it baby Pappy Van Winkle.

That wasnt quite true, because even at that time everything in the 12 Year Old and 15 Year Old Van Winkle bourbons would have had both tanked Stitzel Weller and Bernheim whiskeys incorporated into the blend. Still, the growing obsession for everything Pappy guaranteed that other writers, who had heretofore not made the Buffalo Trace, wheated bourbon connection between Weller and Van Winkle, would repeat the claim. Within months, Weller 12 had joined Van Winkle bourbons in rarity. The obsession has no grown to the point that the other, cheaper Weller expressions have also become hard to get.

Even though the 2014 run on Weller had the air of hysteria about it, there was something inevitable about the thing becoming a chimera. At a time when Michters 10 Year Old has a MSRP of $150, and is hard to get even at that price, its inevitable that something as good as Weller 12 would be hunted into rarity.

The BourbonThe liquid has a bronzed look in the glass, not really copper but not actually full-on amber either. The coat dropped a few tears, not really viscous but not running with them either.

So What Exactly Is A Wheated Bourbon

W.L. Weller 12 Year Bourbon Whiskey Review

You probably already know the definition of bourbon. Just a quick recap: bourbon must have a mash bill of at least 51% corn, must be aged in virgin American oak barrels, and must not have anything but water added .

The proof of the bourbon cannot be higher than 125 when barreled and cannot be less than 80 when bottled.

After the 51% or more corn is in the mash, many bourbons use rye to make up a significant portion of the rest of their mash. In a wheated bourbon, though, the rye is replaced with wheat. This switch-up results in a softer, sweeter tasting bourbon than whiskies that are made with rye.

Three of the most famous wheated bourbons today are Makers Mark, the desirable Pappy Van Winkle , and of course W.L. Weller itself.

Thick, viscous – can taste the sweetness of the wheat added to this. Caramel apple, cherry and 12 other things. If you can get past the syrup thickness, this is heaven. Seriously dangerous – easier to drink than anything, ever.

Fantastic. Way too easy to drink. This is how you wind up in jail in Oxford, Mississippi after another Ole Miss loss. Hotty Toddy!

Aroma – butter cookie. Mouthfeel – medium, center of tongue, doesn’t linger very long. Flavor – buttered popcorn or bread, candied nuts. So easy to drink – an easy sipper for a hard day or an easy day or any day.

The feel of wheat is evident in this bourbon. And it feels smooth, and very much like flours. With the spicy touch, it feels like someones baking a salty pie, using wheat flours. Because of that, Im gonna call Weller 12YO the Doughboy, but since I have to refer to a movie, Im not talking about the famous Pillsbury Doughboy. Since Doughboy was a character played by Ice Cube in the great movie called Boyz n the Hood, Ill state this as the Boyz n the Hood bourbon.

Wl Weller 12 Year Old Review

I had a bottle of W.L. Weller 12 Year Old a couple of years back before starting WhiskeyBon and was not blown away by it which was surprising as it gets heavily hyped. However, I did the old rookie error of cracking it open and drinking it all within a month.

Now a seasoned bourbon drinker I always open bottles as soon as I get them which allows for more accurate reviews. I will then have one dram to try it but then the bottle goes back on the shelf and I leave it for a month or so at least. I have found this massively improves many bourbons.

So I picked up another bottle of Weller 12 and put it through my patented initiation procedure
