EYE Dark caramel
NOSE Banana heavy fruit and butterscotch. Im being serious here, this was something unique and crazy Ive never experienced in a bourbon before and I cant say I was exactly a fan of that. It was bolstered with some notes of caramel, brown sugar and vanilla that when all combined reminded me of Bananas Foster. Weird.
PALATE That same Bananas Foster from the nose is present on the palate but the banana was a bit more subdued by the notes of caramel and butterscotch. Like with the VOSN 8 year Estate Reserve the palate here was a bit more expressive and included notes of peanut brittle, candied citrus, toffee and some hints of vanilla and spice.
FINISH Medium finish with mild notes of caramel, butterscotch, candied citrus and a fruit note that was more like melon than banana.
BALANCE, BODY & FEEL Off balanced and candy heavy with a medium body and rich syrupy texture.
OVERALL Typically I like weird whiskeys that have something new and interesting to offer, but in this case the VOSN Lot 15 was too weird for me and ended up being my least favorite of the night. Overly fruity on the nose and palate with those errant banana notes throwing everything off and honestly making it hard for me to consider drinking it outside of a tasting like this.

Back in early 2019, before Preservation Distillery exploded onto the market with a wide range of Old St. Nick and Rare Perfection bottles, I got the opportunity to taste one of their early bottlings.
The bottle that sets in front of you is a distillery-only release that celebrated their newly constructed facility in Bardstown, KY.
A friend of mine trudged down there and ponyed up over $150 for a bottle of 8 year old sourced rye that came in at a paltry 82.8 proof.
In sheer amazement of why on earth someone would buy a rye whiskey that was so expensive that contained so little proof and was still relatively young, I had to have a sip to see if I was missing out on anything.
If Whistlepig was bottling cask strength, 13 year old Alberta rye for $80-90, there had to be some reason why people were lining up to pay the price for a rye with less of everything and more price.

EYE Dark caramel with some red
NOSE A deep rich well of pleasant notes. Butterscotch, toffee, caramel, spice, vanilla, cinnamon, dark fruit and even a bit of cocoa and leather. It was like walking past a sweets shop that had a bakery right next to it. This is the knd of complex aroma I could sit and sniff for hours.
PALATE Here the dark fruit moves up with heavier notes of dark cherries and dried strawberries. The caramel is rich and brings along notes of oak, candy corn, baking spices, angel food cake, butterscotch and just a touch of astringency. A complex and multi-faceted flavor.
FINISH Long and filled with caramel, brittle, grains, butterscotch, wood and spice.
BALANCE, BODY & FEEL Perfectly balanced with a rich full body and a heavy chewy texture.
OVERALL Without a doubt I want a bottle of this one. Its simply incredible with a deep rich nose and fascinatingly complex palate that I just want to sit and explore for hours. After everyone had received their pours there was about an ounce to an ounce and a half left in the bottle and a part of me wanted to rush over, grab the bottle and run laughing out of the building with the remainder, but I restrained myself because I wanted to see what goodies the rest of the bottles had in store.

Very Olde St Nick Ancient Cask Lot 12 Bourbon Review
Look at this thing! Another awesome bottle from the legendary Eric @ra1nmannn collection. I was given a 2oz sample of this in the big ‘Bourbon Night’ party sample swap. I will be reviewing it here for my own enjoyment, but I also had a glass of it while visiting his bar which was a really nice experience.

Further identification: This bourbon was curated by Julian Van Winkle for KBD in the early 2000s for the Japan market which was enjoying much more of the older bourbon market than the US was at the time the back of the label for this is all listed in Japanese. This was released in incredibly low numbers in 2016.
Palate: Citrus forward with a sour blood orange appearing most prominently. This is followed by rich dark tannins and then a surprising ‘sneaker wave’ of dark plum. This has some really funky characteristics to it. Now that the glass has opened up some it is much lighter. It has returned to a very citrus forward profile, but now with a lighter orange peel zest. This drinks a little hotter than the proof, but that’s fine by me given the 90 proof statement google helped me translate. A tiny bit of dark bread. Very light and enjoyable pour. Chewing on the last sip is still deliciously light with caramel and citrus still being the dominating flavors. The finish is short but it stays in the mouth and doesn’t really give you any of the chest hug of higher proof pours.

Olde St Nick Label To Make A Comeback
Very Olde St. Nick whiskey was released in the early 2000s only in the Japanese market however some bottles have made their way back to whiskey collectors in the US. Kentucky Bourbon Distillers bottled Very Olde St. Nick. Its important to note that they bottled VOSN but it was not their brand.
Today, the TTB approved new Very Olde St. Nick labels. There are 3 new releases: Barrel Proof, 8 Year Old and Non-Age Stated .
This legendary whiskey was crafted and bottled using the purest water, the finest ingredients and small premium charred oak barrels giving it a richly unique flavor.
Initially, I thought the only thing this new release has in common with the Japanese release is the name. Notice the Bottled and Produced by: Olde St. Nick Distillery Fairfield, CA. My guess was the new label took a similar path as Black Maple Hill. The producers/bottler sold off the brand they had no intentions of using. People recognize the name from its legendary heritage and while theyre not aware of the changes, or just curious, they buy a bottle. Its not a bad recipe for success. It saves money/time that you would spend building a brand since the older bottling are rumored to be old Bernheim or Medley juice.
After some more digging I became more confused. Read this post I found from Julian Van Winkle in 2000 on Straight Bourbon in response to a question about Very Olde St. Nick.
The mystery of this new label continues but Ill keep you updated if I find anything else.
