Olive Garden restaurants may be famous for the American-Italian cuisine they serve, but if you check out the menu, there are some pretty unique cocktails on it as well. Take the Olive Garden Italian Margarita, for example. The chain puts an Italian spin on the classic Margarita with an additional shot of amaretto liqueur. This extra fruity, sweet and sour drink is definitely not for the lightweights with its three and a half ounces of booze in every glass. Not every location serves mixed drinks, so if you cant order the drink at your local Olive Garden, why not try making a few at home?

Italian Margarita Cocktail Recipe
A few years ago, on a road trip from Texas to Tennessee, we stopped for dinner and noticed something called an Italian Margarita on the menu, so I ordered one to share. And then another. Soon after, I experimented at home until I re-created a version of the yummy concoction that we like the best. Margarita Thursday, as theyre sometimes known in my house, often feature this Italian Margarita Cocktail Recipe.
I like drinking these margaritas out of a fancy margarita glass with sugar on the rim, but sometimes I use mason jar glasses with straws . You can also double or triple the recipe, rather than making one at a time.

What’s In An Italian Margarita
The main difference between a standard margarita on the rocks and an Italian Margarita is the addition of an Italian liqueur called amaretto liqueur. The amaretto replaces the orange liqueur typically found in a margarita recipe.
But, before we get into what amaretto can do for your Italian Margarita, let’s first cover some basic margarita ingredients first:
- Tequila | Your margaritas can be made with either silver or reposado tequila.
- Lime Juice | Fresh lime juice is best when it comes to making margaritas at home. Don’t stray toward the fake, bottled, sweet, and sour mix. It won’t be nearly as good.
- Orange Juice | In addition to the lime juice, you’ll need a little fresh-squeezed orange juice as well. Not only do orange and amaretto play extremely well together, but the orange juice sort of replaces the orange flavor you’d typically get from the orange liqueur. And, it does it at a much more budget-friendly price point — bonus.
Another factor when it comes to differentiating the Italian Margarita from your classic margarita is the lack of simple syrup.
Simple syrup is a mixture of sugar and water that has been boiled together and is used to sweeten cocktails. You can make it yourself, buy it from the store, or use agave nectar in its place.
If you prefer your cocktails on the sweeter side, consider adding an ounce of simple syrup or agave nectar to this Italian Margarita Recipe.

What Is An Italian Margarita
Italian Margaritas were made famous by Olive Garden, where theyre a popular cocktail on the menu. They are similar to your classic margarita with one main difference. Instead of orange liqueur like Triple Sec, an Italian Margarita is made with Amaretto, an almond liqueur.
In some cases, the amaretto is served on the side in a shot glass for you to pour in but in other cases, like this recipe, its already mixed into the drink.
There are some variations on this recipe, such as an Italian Limoncello Margarita, where the amaretto is replaced with limoncello or other Italian liqueurs.
Whats The Best Tequila To Use
You can use either tequila blanco or reposado tequila, depending on your preference. Olive Garden uses Jose Cuervo Blanco Tequila.
In general, if youre not a huge tequila drinker, opt for a quality blanco tequila. The flavor is much lighter and more crisp than a reposado. However, the reposado is really nice in this Olive Garden Italian margarita as the aging process infuses it with hints of vanilla and oak, which complement the almond liqueur well.
But honestly? Just use your favorite tequila! If you enjoy drinking it, youll enjoy it in the margarita!

How To Make Italian Margaritas
Before you get to whipping up this Italian Margarita Recipe, you’ll first have to decide if you want a salted rim or a sugar-rimmed glass.
If you’d like a salt rim, add cup of kosher salt to a small plate and give it a little shimmy. If you’d like a sugar rim, add cup of granulated sugar to a small plate just the same.
Want to make that sugar rim extra special? Grate about one teaspoon of orange zest over the sugar and rub it in with your fingers.
Now, you’ll take a lime wedge with a slit cut into the center, and run it along the rim of your margarita glass. Once the rim is wet, you can turn the glass upside down and gently swirl it around in either the salt or sugar. If desired, use your fingers to gently press the salt or sugar up against the sides.
Time to get mixing! The cocktail shaker isn’t necessary unless you want your marg extremely chilled before it hits the ice in your glass. If you are just dying to use that shaker, you’ll combine all of your Italian margarita ingredients in a shaker filled with ice, pop on the lid, and shake vigorously for about 30 seconds.
However, when it comes to whipping up Italian margaritas at home, we typically take the easy way out: all you really need is a measuring pitcher and a spoon. Measure out and combine the tequila, amaretto, fresh lime juice, orange juice, and simple syrup in the measuring pitcher and stir until combined.
The Best Italian Margarita With Amaretto
As much as we love classic margaritas, we love switching things up sometimes too. Take this version of Olive Gardens Italian Margarita, for example. By swapping orange liqueur for Italian liqueur , you create a whole new flavor.
This Italian Margarita, thanks to the amaretto, is a bit sweeter than your classic margarita but with the fresh citrus juices its still tart and refreshing. Its perhaps the best cocktail offered at Olive Garden, though you can certainly find it at another Italian restaurant as well.
If a homemade margarita seems intimidating, dont worry this is definitely an easy recipe. All you need to do is combine the ingredients and shake shake shake!

What Makes It Different From A Classic Margarita Cocktail
A traditional margarita is made with tequila, triple sec, lime juice, and a line of salt on the rim of the glass. Occasionally it includes a Sweet & Sour mix. The Italian version, on the other hand, is made by replacing triple sec with about one shot of amaretto liqueur.
Amaretto is a typical almond liqueur from Liguria. It originated 500 years ago in the town of Saronno and is now distributed worldwide.
It is made through the infusion of bitter almonds and herbs in an alcoholic solution. This makes it perfect for home production. In fact, although there are two major producers in the city of Saronno alone , many families make it themselves, often adding apricots to the traditional recipe.
Other variants of the Olive Garden Italian Margherita are made with limoncello, orange liqueur, or even Grand Marnier.
This shouldnt come as a surprise. I think it is fair to say that amaretto is to Ligurian families what limoncello is to southern regions. After all, they are both made by infusing local products and have become an international symbol of their birthplaces.
Plus, they give such a fun twist to the margarita!
As I was reading about the other variants, I remembered that I had actually written a a few years ago.
We tried three different cocktail recipes. In this post, Ill describe them all, and add the recipe card for my favorite one at the end of the post.
Heres what we did.

Chicken & Gnocchi A creamy base and chewy gnocchi for textural contrast, is like a warm embrace in a bowl. You may choose to have cheese grated on top take advantage of the possibility.
Chicken Alfredo Is a brand cult favorite this creamy Olive Garden menu is definitely a delicious dish served with a rather thin chicken cutlet, which helps offset the white sauces richness. long strings of spaghetti tossed with soft chunks of lean protein, all topped with a creamy white sauce.
Shrimp Fritto Misto was a substantial half-pound plate of shrimp that was hand-breaded and softly fried till golden and crispy, along with vegetables including zucchini, bell peppers, and eggplant. It comes with spicy ranch and marinara.

Jose Cuervo Especial Silver
Tequila is made from the blue agave plant and is one of the worlds most popular liquors. At the heart and soul of a good Margarita, it is always nice to use the best quality tequila you can find. There are five different categories. Blanco tequila is the purest form because it doesnt undergo any aging in oak barrels, and therefore has the mildest taste. Most bartenders prefer to use this category of tequila in the Margarita they make.
Jose Cuervo Especial Silver, often called Jose Cuervo Blanco, is a popular choice for tequilas because it is moderately priced and widely available. But you may use any Blanco tequila you have at home without affecting the cocktails taste very much.

How To Make The Italian Margarita
The Italian margarita is so simple to make! If you’re wanting to do a salt, sugar, or salt/sugar rim, start by prepping your glass. First, take a lime and cut it in half. Use that lime to wet the rim of your glass. Dip the rim of your glass in the salt/sugar mixture.
To make the cocktail, take your tequila, orange liquor, almond liquor, and lime juice and add to a shaker with ice. Shake until drink is cold, then strain into a martini glass.
Which Recipe Was The Most Delicious
To recap, now you know:
And you also have three recipes to try! Testing them was a lot of fun, and after evaluating them all, heres what I think.
I feel the first recipe is best used with half the amounts of the ingredients to make shots or small drinks. It was good, but I expect more from a cocktail.
I have to say, at first I was sure that the second recipe would be the best. After all, its no secret that limoncello is my favorite Italian liqueur. But the addition of orange juice and lime in the Olive Garden Italian Margarita is also very intriguing.
Anyway, I did not really like the way the amaretto blended with the other flavors. I think it would be better used alone or for other drinks, like amaretto sour or French connection. So, in the recipe card below, I propose a hybrid of the two recipes that I hope you will like. Let me know what you think of it.

Olive Gardens Italian margarita is much loved because of its vibrant flavors. Besides, the sweet mouthfeel makes it the perfect cocktail for summertime hosting.
While the Olive Garden has put Italian margarita on the map, you can make a far better version at home in about 10 15 minutes max. Additionally, you can make it with only fresh ingredients, skipping the packaged sour mix.

Ok Now That Weve Talked About Tequila
Heres what else you need to make an Italian Margarita:
I chose to make this Italian Margarita with amaretto instead of other Italian liqueurs for a very important reason: amaretto is sweet. That means that , you dont need to add any additional simple syrup or sugar to the recipe for it to taste balanced.
- Fresh Lemon and Lime Juice.
It was important to me to make this Italian Margarita without sour mix. Store-bought sour mix is cloyingly sweet, and making it from scratch isnt always something I have the foresight to do.
Since homemade sour mix contains both lemon AND lime juice, adding some of each, in combination with the sweet amaretto, created the same effect. Its bright and refreshing.
