You can get creative here and use whatever glassware you want! Some folks love those funky stemmed margarita glasses and traditionalists serve it sans rocks up in a coupe. Some choose to drink everything out of mason jars.

I prefer a rocks glass, as shown, which is typically large enough for the ice, good for salt rims, and fits the 5 or so ounces of liquid the shaken cocktail will yield.

What Is The Best Tequila For Classic Margaritas

For starters, always choose a bottle with 100% Blue Agave somewhere on the label. Good quality tequila starts there and for classic margaritas, look for blanco or silver for its intense, citrusy, and clean taste.

Blanco wont compete with the Cointreau but wont get lost either. Opt for a mid-range priced bottle. The nuances of a more expensive tequila wont be perceptible among Cointreau and lime and a higher price doesnt necessarily mean better quality.

There are other top shelf tequila brands besides Don Julio, Clase Azul, and Patron, many of them being smaller production and higher quality. Dont be afraid to try a new brand just because the name isnt popular.

    Shaking a cocktail is one of the most important steps in bartending and there are a few things to keep track of when you do it!

    Ice size: Most folks have standard refrigerator ice which, due to its smaller size, dilutes much quicker than the ice that many professional cocktail bars use. The time needed to shake the cocktail changes more or less according to the ice cube size.

    For home ice, I usually do a quick shake, anywhere from 5-8 seconds. If you shake it too long, the drink may become so diluted that it will taste watered down. If you shake it too short, it may taste a bit too intense.

    Mind you, youll be pouring it over fresh ice, which will cause further dilution in time, so it is best practice to shake less in most cases.

    PRO TIP: I do not recommend dirty dumping, which is when you shake your cocktail and then dump all the contents from the shaker into the glass to use that same ice in the drink. Fresh ice is full-sized and will melt more slowly than small chips, leading to a better quality cocktail.

    Did you know there’s only 4 ingredients in the perfect Classic Margarita on the rocks . Just 4! It’s ridiculously simple, and just SO good. Concerning ingredients, I prefer to go for the good stuff. If you’re making a margarita from scratch, definitely invest in a bottle of Cointreau. This orange liquor has great, yet subtle flavor that won’t overpower your drink and will literally save you the headache of the over sweetened, $6-8 bottles of triple sec. Totally worth it.

    I don’t know about you, but I one hundred thousand percent prefer my Classic Margaritas on the rocks. Not going to lie, those first I-just-turned-21 days, I was definitely all about a blended margarita. Nope. Not anymore. Blending the ice inevitably waters down your drink much quicker and also takes away from the sweet orange of the Coiuntreau, the tang of the lime juice, and of course, the delicious burn of Tequila. On the rocks, a classic margarita truly shines.

    Lastly, I know it’s a pain but try and use fresh lime juices as best you can. It can be so obxnious juicing all those limes but sip a margarita with fresh limes versus one with bottled juice, and you’ll instantly taste the difference. Trust.

    How To Make A Classic Margarita

    The classic garnish for a margarita is a salt rim. To achieve this for a crowd, fill a saucer with lime juice, water, or a mix of the two. Fill a second saucer with kosher salt or coarse sea salt. If you’d like, you can add lime zest, chili powder, or other seasonings to the salt. If you’re adding spices, mix no more than one part spice to three parts salt.

    I prefer a rocks glass for a classic margarita, but use a if you must. If you’re prepping several margaritas, turn your glass upside-down, place it in the saucer of lime juice at an angle, and turn the cup so that just the outside lip of the glass is wetted by the lime and water mixture. Immediately place the rim of the glass flat into the saucer of salt, then lift, turn the glass right-side-up, set aside, and repeat with remaining glasses. It’s important to moisten just the outside of the glass so that you don’t get salt inside the glass, which can throw off the flavors of the drink.

    Just making one or two drinks? Run a halved juicy lime just around the outside rim of your glasses and then dip into the saucer of salt.

    For each margarita, add 2 ounces tequila, 1 ounce high-quality orange liqueur , and 1 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice.

    Taking care not to mar the salt rim, fill cocktail glasses to the top with more fresh ice cubes.

    Do You Really Need Cointreau

    The very best margarita recipe, in our opinion, features Cointreau as the orange liqueur. Cointreau has a orange perfume flavor thats well balanced between bitter and sweet, while Triple Sec can have a more harsh flavor. But you can use Triple Sec if its all you have!

    How To Make A Salt Rim For A Margarita

    First things first: make a good salt rim. You’ll need:

    • A wedge of lime with a notch cut into the middle

    Once you’ve gathered your materials, here’s all you need to do. You can see all the steps in action in the video that accompanies this post.

    • Fit the notched lime wedge onto the rim of the glass and generously rub it all around the perimeter to wet the top of the glass.
    • Pour some salt onto the plate.
    • Roll the outside face of the glass into the salt so that the salt sticks to the lime juice. You don’t want to put the glass down with its top perpendicular to the plate, because if salt sticks to the inside of the rim it will fall into the drink and make the drink itself salty. Salting only the outside of the glass lets you choose when you want a little burst of salinity.

    Can I use frozen strawberries? No, they wont thaw in time to create the juices necessary for this margarita. Fresh berries are best!

    Whats the difference between tequila blanco and reposado tequila? Reposado tequila is briefly aged in barrels, which makes it a light brown color. Silver tequila is not aged in barrels. Silver tequila will have a cleaner taste, and reposado tequila will have a touch of earthiness and character. The type of tequila matters, and I would stick with silver tequila or reposado tequila. I recommend avoiding anejo tequila, as it has a strong flavor that doesnt work well in this strawberry margarita recipe.

    Can I use sour mix or margarita mix instead of lime juice? Id rather you didnt. Lime juice is not interchangeable with sour mix if you want the same flavor fresh lime juice makes this margarita great. Sour mix , is made of lemon, lime, and sugar. However, the flavor isnt even comparable to fresh lime juice. If you have a margarita mix that youve used before and you LOVE, you can certainly give it a shot!

    Is agave syrup the same as agave nectar? Yes. Honestly, the stuff youll find in the States thats labeled as syrup or nectar is the same product. If you cant find agave syrup, simple syrup will work!

    How To Make A Strawberry Margarita

    This homemade strawberry margarita starts with ripe strawberries for an ultra fresh flavor. Instead of using a pre-made mix, an added benefit to this margarita recipe is you can control the amount of sweetness to suit your tastes. All you need to do is increase or decrease the amount of Simple Syrup to your liking.

    Even though this strawberry margarita is on the rocks, youll still need a blender to puree the fresh strawberries. Wash your strawberries and cut off the green leaves then toss them in the blender.

    Add light tequila, Grand Marnier, fresh lime juice and simple syrup and blend until you have a smooth texture.

    Youll still have small bits of strawberries when youre done blending. You can either leave them or strain your margarita concoction as you pour it into your glass.

I use this super easy Margarita Recipe that only takes 3 minutes to make and they are delicious.     On occasion though, I venture out and make other flavored margarita recipes and I do love strawberries in summer cocktails.

    Depending on where you live in the U.S., strawberry season peaks anywhere between April to June. But in todays global market, fresh strawberries are available almost year round. This means you can make fresh strawberry margaritas anytime you feel like it.

    Since writing my Spring & Summer Recipe Magazine, Ive become even more aware of the seasonality of produce. I dont know that I ever knew the season for mangoes here in California. As it turns out, the peak season is summer.

    There are a lot of frozen strawberry margarita recipes out there, but we needed a strawberry margarita recipe on the rocks! I tested this recipe quite a few times with a lot of different ingredients but I really wanted to create a strawberry margarita recipe that didnt require a bunch of steps, a special syrup, or any obscure ingredients. This is a straight-forward margarita on the rocks with macerated strawberries, and once the strawberries are ready, the margaritas come together in no time.

    This recipe makes two margaritas and takes 15 total minutes to make, including a resting period for the strawberries so they are extra juicy before being muddled. These are standard, simple ingredients that make a great classic margarita if you leave out the strawberries, too.
