What Kind Of Tequila Is Best For Margaritas
Reposado tequila is typically the go-to for margaritas, but you can use blanco, reposado, or añejo varieties. Its all personal preference!
In these photos, I used a really good añejo tequila that I had in the cupboard because I was craving something with a bit more complexity and sweetness. When I want a margarita thats simply refreshing and crisp, I choose a reposado or blanco tequila.
The most important thing when choosing tequila for classic margaritas is quality. Since margaritas are only made with three ingredients, choosing a high-quality tequila is important since there is nowhere for flavors to hide!
Whats Triple Sec Whats The Difference Vs Cointreau
The orange liqueur family is confusing, because Triple Sec is both a family of liqueurs and a product in itself. Heres a little background info:
- Triple Sec is a family of dry orange liqueurs. In most liquor stores, bottles labeled Triple Sec are lower in quality and more affordable than Cointreau. Triple Sec has a more straightforward flavor vs Cointreau: its very citrusy, almost like an orange-infused vodka. The quality ranges based on the brand.
- Cointreauis a type of Triple Sec. Its a is a clear, orange-flavored liqueur made from sweet and bitter orange peels. It tastes smoother than Triple Sec, with warm spices that add complexity and nuance. You can use either in a margarita!
Is Triple Sec High In Calories
There is no way around the fact that traditional triple sec is a high-calorie addition to your drink. Luckily, there are a few ways you can still enjoy the taste and save some calories in the process.
Sugar-free triple sec
It is not incredibly common to find sugar-free triple sec, but it does exist. The high alcohol content will still offer a significant number of calories, but at least youll save a few from the sugar.
Alcohol-free triple sec
There are triple sec syrups available in the exact opposite vein that offer the taste of the liqueur without the alcohol content.
This is an excellent way to save on calories and enjoy a margarita that isnt as strong as the traditional recipe. It also allows you to make a delicious margarita mocktail with all the taste but none of the alcohol.

Ingredients For Classic Margarita
To make this cocktail, I used:
- tequila: Any high quality silver or blanco tequila will be perfect for this recipe.
- triple sec: being an orange liqueur, this amplifies the citrus flavors in the cocktail. Most triple sec are alcoholic but there are some that are non alcoholic as well. This Monin triple sec from Amazon is a great one along with any of these options.
- lime juice: I used freshly squeezed lime juice here but if thats not available you can always use unsweetened lime juice from the store.
- simple syrup: the syrup sweetens this margarita cocktail nicely and balances the sour citrus taste. I prefer my drinks a little sweet, but feel free to tone down the sweetness and reduce the amount. Use my simple syrup recipe to make your own beforehand it stays well in the fridge.
- salt: this is entirely optional for aesthetics around the rim of the glass. You can use regular table salt, Himalayan pink salt, or citrus salt for this drink. Sugar is also a great option.

What’s The Difference Between A Daiquiri And A Margarita
The daiquiri and margarita are two very popular classic cocktails that have a similar sweet-tart flavor profile. The original recipes for both use lime juice, though the daiquiri has a rum base and is typically sweetened with simple syrup rather than triple sec. Both cocktails can be made with a variety of fruits or tossed in the blender too.
Why Is Triple Sec So Cheap
Price. These orange liqueurs also fall under varied price ranges because of their different manufacturing processes. Since several brand names produce triple sec liqueur, this drink is more affordable than Cointreau. Not to mention this liqueur presumably uses less expensive ingredients and methods.

How To Make This Classic Margarita
For this recipe, you can use 3 parts tequila for 2 parts triple sec, 1.5 parts lime juice and 1 part simple syrup. Use this ratio to scale up the recipe to make margaritas for a crowd. For larger batches, store in the fridge until you ready to serve.
Step 1: Prepare your garnishes if you plan on using them for your cocktail. Lime slices, lime wedges and twists are great options here. You can also use the lime to coat the rim of your cocktail glasses and gently roll them in salt. Of course, these are absolutely optional.
Step 2: Wash, cut and squeeze fresh limes to extract the juice.
Step 3: Make simple syrup. I have an entire post explaining how easy it is to make homemade simple syrup. Essentially, you can bring 1 part water and 1 part sugar to a boil on medium heat until the sugar dissolves and the syrup thickens slightly. Cool the syrup and set aside until you are ready to make the drink.
Step 4: Mix together ice, tequila, triple sec, fresh lime juice and simple syrup.
Step 5: Strain and serve in a chilled margarita glass with your choice of garnish, salt or nothing else.

Orange You Glad You Bought Liqueur
The easiest ingredient to overlook is the orange liqueur. Triple sec seems like a weird thing to buy for just one cocktail, right? Cant you just add a splash of orange juice or something?
Not if you want a well-balanced drink. Triple sec, a term used interchangeably with curaçao, is a type of orange liqueur that provides fruity flavors as well as sweet and bitter notes all of which are essential for a well-made Margarita. Popular labels include Cointreau, Combier, Pierre Ferrand Curaçao, and Grand Marnier.
Swanson likes to use Cointreau in her Margaritas because its made with bitter orange peels, so she finds it drier than many brands of triple sec, and considerably less sweet than brandy-based Grand Marnier, she says.
Kearns opts for Cointreau or Combier, the 1834 orange liqueur that purports to be the worlds first triple sec. David Mor, beverage manager at Cindys in Chicago, prefers Pierre Ferrand Dry Curaçao in his Margaritas.
The most important thing there is to avoid anything that is simply called Triple Sec, Kearns says. This was a marketing statement devised by Cointreau at one point in its long history, and knock-off brands latched onto it. Consider yourself warned.

Best Triple Sec For Margaritas
Triple Sec varies widely in quality based on price. Heres what to know about buying Triple Sec for a margarita:
- Look for a mid-priced Triple Sec. The very cheapest Triple Sec isnt great. We like the Drillaud brand as a mid-range option.
- Opt for Cointreau as a higher budget option. If youre ok with the price tag, use Cointreau: you wont regret it! Cointreau is technically a Triple Sec, so go for that if budget allows.

Finest Call Premium Triple Sec
If you like something a little different, with little to no alcohol, this Triple Sec is the one for you. Finest Call Premium Triple Sec is non-alcoholic. It retains all the qualities of Triple Sec, minus the booziness.
It is infact a syrup and due to its non-alcoholic content, it is very easy to source and even comes with an easy-pour spout for convenience.
The main issues with this Triple Sec, is that due to no alcoholic content, it may throw off the taste of your drink by changing the ratios. The flavor is also rather more bland than the alcoholic alternatives.

Is Triple Sec Required In A Margarita
Triple sec is one of the key ingredients in a margarita. It acts as the drink’s sweetener and adds a hint of orange flavor. You can use another orange liqueur, such as curaçao, and the Cadillac margarita uses the brandy-based Grand Marnier. Though definitely not an authentic margarita, some people prefer to skip the liqueur and use simple syrup with a squeeze of fresh orange juice instead . With these changes, you will need to play with the proportions to create a well-balanced margarita.
What Is Blue Curaao Vs Triple Sec Vs Cointreau
There is no legal differentiation between blue curaçao and triple sec, and Cointreau is just one brand of triple sec. All are orange liqueurs. Curaçao can come in a variety of colors, of which blue is one. Triple sec is traditionally clear. While curaçao is said to originate from the Dutch Caribbean island of the same name, triple sec has its origins in France. Curaçao is traditionally made from one very specific type of bitter orange, the laraha orange, which grows on the island of Curaçao however, there is no legal requirement that this needs to be the case for a product to be called curaçao.

Which Orange Liqueur Is Best For Margaritas
Triple sec and Cointreau are the two types of orange liqueur that are often used in margaritas. Theyre both acceptable to use, but I prefer one over the other depending on the type of margarita.
When making this classic margarita, I prefer using Cointreau because of its smoother finish and more balanced flavors.
When making blended fruity margaritas, I prefer using triple sec since its straightforward orange flavor is often diluted in the drink.
Sometimes Grand Marnier is used instead of triple sec or Cointreau, but it is not a traditional ingredient in a margarita.

How Strong Is A Margarita
Using the original recipe and an 80-proof tequila along with Cointreau, the margarita is definitely not a low-proof cocktail. It shakes up to around 27 percent ABV , or just over half the strength of a tequila shot. If you serve it on the rocks, it will dilute and relax a bit over time.

Best Tequila For Margaritas
You can use any type of tequila in your triple sec margarita, but it goes without saying: the better the tequila, the better the drink! Our preference is tequila reposado. Heres why:
- Tequila reposado is aged tequila, which is stored from 2 to 12 months. It has a nuanced flavor, with notes of oak and vanilla. It has a much more nuanced flavor than blanco.
- Tequila blanco is un-aged, and has a more straightforward flavor and that signature tequila burn. You can use it here, but reposado makes for a more interesting drink.
