The 30 Best Bourbons For Every Budget

Bourbon continues to rank among the most popular distilled spirits in the United States and its not just sales seeing a spike. As the number of producers in the country goes from strength to strength, so too does the range of styles in the category, with distillers turning to innovative fermentation and aging techniques, as well as left-field grains to stand out.

The tasting for VinePairs 2022 edition of our annual bourbon roundup offered great insight into how broad and deep the category has grown. Among the more than 150 bottles considered, we sampled brands from across the country, and encountered more craft expressions than ever before.

Speaking of craft, a large portion of the bottles considered this year came from independent brands that source their whiskey from Indiana . While this practice has been looked down upon by some in the past, the majority of brands employing that strategy now are increasingly transparent about their whiskeys origins. Producers in that field who made it onto this list did so by taking the spirit in a new direction via a finishing technique or proprietary aging process, or by blending with their own whiskey and achieving harmonious results.

With all that said, here are 30 of the best bourbons to drink in 2022.

Horse Soldier Reserve Barrel Strength Bourbon Whiskey Taste 1

Average Price:$98

The Whiskey:

The bourbon in this bottle was contract distilled in Ohio at Middlewest . The juice is a wheated bourbon that spent eight years mellowing before bottling. Each barrel was hand-picked before being married into a barrel strength expression thats bottled as-is.

Bottom Line:

This was a really solid pour of bourbon. It had a hint of that grainy craftiness but was otherwise a classic bourbon. In the end, the high ABVs did make this feel like a great cocktail candidate that needed a couple of rocks as a sipper.

Bourbon

$84.99

Bourbon is the second powerhouse in the whisky world and its made in America primarily from corn. Unlike in Scotland and Ireland where whisky is made primarily from the same grain, American whiskeys are often made from a mix of different grains, known as mash. In fact, its quite common for an American whiskey to made up of corn, wheat, rye and barley.

For bourbon to be called bourbon, it must be made from a minimum of 51% corn, must be distilled to an ABV of no more than 80%, and must be aged in new charred-oak barrels. The charred-oak barrels and corn are easily the biggest factors that differentiates bourbon from other whiskys, as it gives the whiskey a much sweeter flavor and smoother texture than barley.

Jeffersons Ocean Voyage 24 Review

Since my first taste in 2014, Ive been a fan of this series, but I havent re-visited it for a review till now with the Jeffersons Ocean Voyage 24. And while it may have been about 8 years since I sat down for a formal review, I havent been a stranger.

At whiskey festivals, events, brand tastings and private tasting, bottles of Jeffersons Ocean show up and while I havent loved each one Ive had, I havent hated any of them either. Theyre all at the very least enjoyable. Lets hope this one keeps that trend.

Lets get to drinkin

Who Makes Jefferson Bourbon

Jeffersons Bourbon is a small batch bourbon that is handmade in Kentucky. The bourbon is made with a unique blend of corn, rye, and barley. The bourbon is then aged in new oak barrels for a minimum of four years.

Trey and Chet Zoeller, both of whom are avid collectors, first established Jeffersons Bourbon in 1997. Jeffersons has begun bottling and batching a variety of products in Kentucky as a result of their partnership with Kentucky Artisan Distillery. Many of Jeffersons experimental products were stored at KAD. One of the most noticeable changes is the facilitys addition of tours.

Jefferson’s Ocean ‘Aged At Sea’ VSB Bourbon Whiskey Review

Average Price:$100

The Whiskey:

This small batch from Savage & Cooke out in California is made from an MGP of Indiana 7-year-old high-rye bourbon. Master Distiller Jordan Via hand picks only 38 barrels for this blend and then cuts that juice with Alexander Valley spring water before bottling.

Bottom Line:

This was just good bourbon. It felt like a solid sipper all around, even neat. Id be willing to bet this also makes one hell of a Manhattan or Sazerac too.

Tasting Notes: Jeffersons Ocean: Aged At Sea Bourbon

Vital Stats: The subject of this review, Jeffersons Ocean batch number 14, clocks in at 90 proof. As mentioned above, this batch carries only the straight bourbon designation, so it is safe to assume that at least some non-Kentucky bourbon found its way into this batch. Jeffersons Ocean retails for $80 to $90.

Appearance: In a glass, Jeffersons Ocean appears a medium honey brown.

Nose: Since Jeffersons sources bourbon, the mash bill is unknown. However, the nose for this particular batch lines up with rye grain recipe bourbon with strong floral notes that balance with salted caramel. While I initially chalked up Jeffersons claims of similarity to an Islay Scotch to marketing fluff, there is certainly a soft salt and light smoke note mixed with the caramel that I cannot recall encountering in any other bourbon.

Palate: Further supporting my suspicion that this particular batch of Jeffersons Ocean includes mostly rye grain mash bill bourbon, the front of the palate leads off with floral notes, citrus notes, and a light black pepper spice. In the mid palate, those flavors taper off and the bourbon sweetens with caramel driving most of the flavor. Similar to the nose, soft salt and smoke combine with the caramel, and the finish tapers off with a light dry note of oak combining with the predominant caramel.

Penelope Valencia Taste 6

Average Price:$83

The Whiskey:

This bourbon starts off as Penelopes beloved and much-lauded four-grain bourbon. That whiskey is then re-barreled into Spanish Vino de Naranja casks from Valencia before small batching, proofing, and bottling.

Bottom Line:

This was a great whiskey all around. Its a wonderful sipper and I can see it really popping in an old fashioned. It also gave me a chance to use one of my favorite memes from The Simpsons.

The Best Bourbons Under $50

Jefferson

Broken Barrel Whiskey Co. California Oak Bourbon

Distilled in Kentucky, this high-rye release is finished using a mix of virgin French Oak staves and California Cabernet wine cask staves. The process has a noticeable and enjoyable influence on the final whiskey, imparting a prominent vanilla note and juicy red berry flavors. If youre a regular wine drinker looking to explore bourbon, this is the bottle for you. Average price: $31. Rating: 91.

Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

The eponymous release from the Buffalo Trace distillery, this expression remains among the most widely available and easily obtainable from the brand. That doesnt mean it should go overlooked, though. This is a solid entry-level bourbon with enjoyable caramel, brown sugar, and spice notes. It also performs valiantly when used in cocktails. Average price: $35. Rating: 91.

Hirsch Selected Whiskeys The Horizon

Hirsch combines a blend of two rye-forward Indiana-distilled bourbons for this release. The first, and majority component, is a little under 5 years old, while the second made from an even higher-rye mash bill is aged more than 6 and a half years. Final Thoughts & Score:

Overall, the process behind Jeffersons Ocean certainly makes this a unique product. However, whether the process creates a different flavor profile is up for debate. At best, I think the sea aging process adds a touch of salt and smoke complexity that usually doesnt appear in bourbon, but those notes are very subdued.

With all that in mind, certainly give Jeffersons Ocean a try if you see it at a bar. However, if youre interested in the flavor profile noted above, look for a cask strength release, as that will likely have more pronounced characteristics derived from the sea aging process.

Bookers Bourbon 2021-04 Noe Strangers Batch

The fourth and final 2021 release from Bookers, this iteration was aged for 6 years, 6 months, and 12 days, and arrives at a dizzying 62.2 percent ABV. As with all cask-strength bourbons, it proves to be a heady, in-your-face experience, though not one that lacks nuance or complexity. Fruity, floral notes take charge on the intense nose, while the palate leans into baked desserts and rich caramel. Dont be afraid to add a splash of water. Average price: $113. Rating: 93.

Launched in 2020, Elijah Craig Toasted Barrel quickly won over bourbon aficionados, and bottles now fetch much more than its $50 MSRP at retail. Made by finishing standard Elijah Craig in new, custom-toasted oak barrels, the bourbon has multiple layers of aromas and flavors that go well beyond wood. Expect sweet caramel tones on the nose, and enticing coffee and dark chocolate on the palate. If you come across this bottle, dont leave it sitting on the shelf. Average price: $132. Rating: 93.

I.W. Harper 15-Year-Old Bourbon Whiskey

Jeffersons Ocean Voyage 24 Overall Thoughts And Score

Like most of the Jeffersons Ocean releases, this batch is decent. I do like my earlier batch a bit more, but there is nothing to dislike in this batch. Its a soft, easy sipper with an interestingly heavy banana note. It gets more oaky and spiced as it opens, but never becomes a heavily oaked or spiced bourbon. It stays soft and a bit fruity.

On the whole, this Jeffersons Ocean Voyage 24 comes through as a slightly above average bourbon. Theres nothing wrong with it, its tasty, worth at least a drink and great to mix with, but there isnt a ton of depth to it so it ends up being on the lighter side overall.

SCORE: 3/5

Field & Sound Bottled in Bond Bourbon Whiskey

Produced on Long Island, this high-rye bourbon utilizes locally grown grains and sweet mash fermentation. If the heavy maritime influence, prominently referenced on the bottles label, is at all detectable, its via subtle saline notes on the nose and finish. More abundant is the attractive spice of winter rye, and bold, heady vanilla and caramel notes on the palate. This is a great craft option. Average price: $50. Rating: 92.

Old Forester The 117 Series 1910 Extra Old

Old Foresters 1910 Old Fine Whisky sees a secondary period of maturation in heavily charred oak barrels. This, the third release in the distillerys limited-edition The 117 Series, offers drinkers a glimpse at how that whiskey evolves with an extra 18 months in oak. Pouring a deep shade of maple, it exudes dark sugar and chocolate aromas, and delivers rich doses of caramel on the palate. Available from late February onward, this gift-shop and online exclusive merits the extra effort to seek out. MSRP: $50. Rating: 93.
