Whats The Best Tequila To Use

You can use either tequila blanco or reposado tequila, depending on your preference. Olive Garden uses Jose Cuervo Blanco Tequila.

In general, if youre not a huge tequila drinker, opt for a quality blanco tequila. The flavor is much lighter and more crisp than a reposado. However, the reposado is really nice in this Olive Garden Italian margarita as the aging process infuses it with hints of vanilla and oak, which complement the almond liqueur well.

But honestly? Just use your favorite tequila! If you enjoy drinking it, youll enjoy it in the margarita!

We still get plenty of bright lime that we all know and love from our margaritas, but the amaretto adds a welcomed richness to make one unforgettable tequila cocktail. Heres what else you need to make an Italian Margarita:

I chose to make this Italian Margarita with amaretto instead of other Italian liqueurs for a very important reason: amaretto is sweet. That means that , you dont need to add any additional simple syrup or sugar to the recipe for it to taste balanced.

  • Fresh Lemon and Lime Juice.

It was important to me to make this Italian Margarita without sour mix. Store-bought sour mix is cloyingly sweet, and making it from scratch isnt always something I have the foresight to do.

Since homemade sour mix contains both lemon AND lime juice, adding some of each, in combination with the sweet amaretto, created the same effect. Its bright and refreshing.

Tips For The Best Margarita

  • Pick fresh, ripe limes and oranges. Select oranges and limes that are firm but still give a bit when you squeeze them. Avoid any that look dried out or are too mushy.
  • Roll the limes before squeezing. To get the most juice out of your limes , roll them under your palm on the table for a few minutes. I find using a lemon press also helps to get every bite of juice out.
  • Adjust the flavorto your preference. As mentioned above, I find no need to add any simple syrup to my Italian margarita. However, feel free to add some if you prefer sweeter drinks. You can also experiment using a combo of orange liqueur with the amaretto.

How To Make Italian Margaritas

Before you get to whipping up this Italian Margarita Recipe, you’ll first have to decide if you want a salted rim or a sugar-rimmed glass.

If you’d like a salt rim, add cup of kosher salt to a small plate and give it a little shimmy. If you’d like a sugar rim, add cup of granulated sugar to a small plate just the same.

Want to make that sugar rim extra special? Grate about one teaspoon of orange zest over the sugar and rub it in with your fingers.

Now, you’ll take a lime wedge with a slit cut into the center, and run it along the rim of your margarita glass. Once the rim is wet, you can turn the glass upside down and gently swirl it around in either the salt or sugar. If desired, use your fingers to gently press the salt or sugar up against the sides.

Time to get mixing! The cocktail shaker isn’t necessary unless you want your marg extremely chilled before it hits the ice in your glass. If you are just dying to use that shaker, you’ll combine all of your Italian margarita ingredients in a shaker filled with ice, pop on the lid, and shake vigorously for about 30 seconds.

However, when it comes to whipping up Italian margaritas at home, we typically take the easy way out: all you really need is a measuring pitcher and a spoon. Measure out and combine the tequila, amaretto, fresh lime juice, orange juice, and simple syrup in the measuring pitcher and stir until combined.

Jose Cuervo Especial Silver

Tequila is made from the blue agave plant and is one of the worlds most popular liquors. At the heart and soul of a good Margarita, it is always nice to use the best quality tequila you can find. There are five different categories. Blanco tequila is the purest form because it doesnt undergo any aging in oak barrels, and therefore has the mildest taste. Most bartenders prefer to use this category of tequila in the Margarita they make.

Jose Cuervo Especial Silver, often called Jose Cuervo Blanco, is a popular choice for tequilas because it is moderately priced and widely available. But you may use any Blanco tequila you have at home without affecting the cocktails taste very much.

Why Is There No Simple Syrup Or Sour Mix

Many margarita recipes call for simple syrup to sweeten the cocktail but I left it out in this recipe. Why? Amaretto is a very sweet liqueur so, in my opinion, no additional sweetener is required. The flavor is perfect as-is. However, if you like super sweet drinks, feel free to add in simple syrup to taste.

Sour mix is typically added when using a premade margarita mix to add the citrus flavor but in this case its not needed, as were using the real thing fresh orange and lime juice.

The secret process starts by coating the potato slices with the dry breading mix, which contains salt. The salt in the blend will draw water out of the potatoes, magically transforming the dry breading into a wet batter in about 20 minutes. When all the breading is wet, the potatoes go into the oil for partial frying.

Can I Turn This Into A Big Batch Cocktail

Absolutely! For a big batch Italian margarita, simply combine the tequila, amaretto, and citrus juices in a pitcher. Stir and refrigerate.

Prepare the margarita glasses with the lime wedges and margarita salt, then pour the margarita into the prepared glass over ice. I do not recommend adding ice directly to the pitcher as it will water down the margarita.

    Tequilawhich To Choose For Margaritas

For margaritas, I like to use one of two types of tequila: silver or reposado.

Silver tequila is my usual go-to. Its clean and crisp. If you are worried about tequila flavor overwhelming a margarita, this is a good option.

Reposado tequila has been aged for at least 60 days. The aging imparts flavors of vanilla and oak. If you want your tequila to have a more robust flavor or like the idea of oaky/vanilla-y notes in your margarita, its a lovely choice.

Fun fact: At 1 year or longer, the tequila becomes known as añjeo tequila. Its aged flavor is even more pronounced.

If I had my pick of tequilas, for this Italian Margarita I recommend reposado tequila. The rounder, lightly caramel-y notes are a lovely profile in the drink. That said, silver tequila is still fantastic in this recipe. If thats what you have or prefer overall, its a good choice too.
