Margarita – The Basics

Fresh fruit is another cocktail staple. If you dont want to add other frozen desserts, try something refreshing. Cucumber, lemon, key lime, pomegranate, and other fruits offer natural sweetness and flavors to complement your cocktail mix. You can also opt for fruit juice if you cant infuse real fruit pieces into your mix. A little pomegranate juice, for instance, adds tartness to your mix, whereas watermelon juice adds refreshing sweetness.

Learn how to use ready-made margarita mix to shake and blend up classic cocktails. Enjoy these sweet, salty, sour drinks with your friends.

This simple drink is a classic around the world. The margarita didnât originate on the tropical shores of Mexico, though. This may be where youâre likely to get a great margarita now, but this recipe originated in either the landlocked Mexican city of Puebla or in Texas. Cocktail buffs dispute the latter legend, but weâll give you both versions and let you decide.

According to reliable expert bar-storians, bartender Danny Negrete created this famed drink to please his girlfriend, Margarita, who liked salt in her cocktails. However, some sources believe that Texas bartenders mixed up this beverage for the first time. These Texan tales vary in the details, but they all have one thing in common: The margarita was an experiment or a mistake. If this isnât enough drama for you, feel free to go down the rabbit hole of margarita stories yourself. Wikipedia alone cites eight different origin theories.

We canât solve the mystery of where the margarita originated, we can certainly tell you how to make one. Weâll teach you how to make a margarita mix cocktail, which is the easiest of all margarita recipes. And, for all the burgeoning mixologists out there, weâll also show how to make traditional margarita recipes with triple sec, tequila, and lime.

How To Upgrade Your Margarita

How To Make Margarita Mix | Easy Margarita Recipe

There are so many ways you can upgrade your margarita recipe! Try out some of these varieties to shake things up a bit.

  • Spice up your salt rim. I like to add lime zest and a pinch of cayenne to the salt. You can also add a bit of sugar to the mix.

  • Try it with mezcal! A mezcal margarita is a very different experience but just as delightful. Mezcal is an Oaxacan spiritlike tequila, its from the agave plant, but has a smokier profile. It can make a lovely margarita with a complex flavor.

  • Add some fruit for a flavored margarita. This is a classic way to personalize your margarita. I love to add fresh berries in the summer, either muddled into a drink on the rocks or blended in a frozen margarita.

  • Cointreau is a type of triple sec, or orange liqueur, which is a classic choice for margaritas. But there are many types of triple sec out there that would be just as delicious. You can also try other types of orange liqueurs like Grand Marnier or Curacao, which will change the flavor slightly.

What Is The Best Tequila For Margaritas

You can use whatever tequila you like for margaritas, but I prefer to go with cheaper options rather than the best Tequila. Once its mixed in, having the highest quality Tequila wont matter.

That being said, I also dont pick the cheapest Tequila. Go for a good mid-range Tequila and youll be set. Repasado Tequilas are much smoother than Blanco Tequilas, so I prefer that.

How To Make Margaritas With Mix

Once you have your margarita mix ready, all you need is tequila and ice. Cointreau is optional, especially as this mix includes orange and agave, but I really enjoy the flavor it imparts. Triple sec is often used instead of Cointreau, and has a similar flavor, but is lower in alcohol.

If youre not familiar with Cointreau, its a French-made orange liqueur thats fresh, floral, and sweet. The original margarita was actually created in 1948 when a woman named Margarita Sames mixed lime juice with tequila and Cointreau.

I usually use about 3 oz. of the mix, 1 1/2 oz. tequila, and 1 oz. Cointreau, but you can play around with the ratios. Heres a great guide all about ounces and cups, which will come in handy if you dont have an ounce measuring cup.

The best way to make a margarita is to shake it for 30 seconds with plenty of ice. Dont skip this step as the ice melts quickly while being shaken, diluting the mix and making it ice cold. If you dont have a cocktail shaker, you can use a mason jar or blend in the blender for a few seconds.

Do you like your margaritas salty? If so, simply run a cut lime around the rim and dip into a dish of salt.

  • Shake shake shake: Give the mixture a good shake for about 10 seconds or until chilled.
