You Could Gain Weight If You Drink This Kind Of Gin Every Night

Introducing our new gin and tonics! This tasty treat is Zymurgoriums ...

Gin may be the base for some delicious low-calorie cocktail concoctions, but youre going to want to pay attention to what kind of gin youre ordering especially if youre looking to maintain or lose weight. If your go-to drink is a sloe gin fizz, well, you may be in for a surprise.

Its easy to mistake sloe gin or, as it sounds to the ears, slow gin as a method of preparation, à la James Bonds famous shaken, not stirred martini. As it happens, though, sloe gin isnt even technically considered gin. Its a liqueur, Sam Carter, senior brand ambassador for Bombay Sapphire, explained to Good Housekeeping, and it gets its name because its made from gin and sloe berries .

Regular ole gin is 37.5 percent alcohol by volume , whereas sloe gin is anywhere between 20 and 25 percent ABV. Plus, Carter explained, theres a lot more sugar in it than a regular gin. And, as we all know, consuming sugar is pretty much the easiest way to pack on the pounds. So, if you want to drink gin every night, at least avoid sloe gin drinks.

Tips And Tricks For Making The Best Gin And Tonic

The honest truth here is that if you are a person who absolutely hates gin, then you may never really come to enjoy a good g& t- and thats ok. But, dont rule it out until youve tried these simple tips!

  • Fresh lime is a must. That concentrated stuff? Dont do it.
  • Speaking of lime, use two lime wedges, not just one. The first after you add the gin and the second after you add the tonic.
  • Always use freshly opened tonic water. Trust me, you guys, flat tonic water is nasty.
  • In other words, dont buy big, giant bottles of tonic water. Smaller is better.
  • One last thing about the tonic water- all tonic water are NOT created equal. Some are sweeter, some are better carbonated. Often tonic water from a glass is better. Fan favorites include Q-Mixers and Fever-Tree as these have been made specifically for mixed cocktails like the gin and tonic.
  • The gin. Im not suggesting you should go for the top of the top, but keep in mind the ingredient list. After all, the gin and tonic is, quite literally, all about the ginand the tonic.
  • The ice. Larger ice cubes are better as they have a smaller overall surface area for them to melt.
  • Finally, measure the quantities. Too much gin and your drink will literally taste only like gin. Too much tonic water andwhats the point?
  • TIP- If you are more of a vodka person, follow these simple tips, simply swap the gin for vodka.

What Are The Common Mistakes That Everybody Makes

So if youre trying to impress your friends with your mixing skills at your next dinner party, be sure not to make these rookie errors. If youve ever been handed a sub-standard gin and tonic in a packed bar, you know what to watch out for.

Stephanies top three greatest G& T sins are:

Not enough ice. Really fill up your glass, almost to the top, so your drink stays cold, and doesnt get watered down quickly.

Dont overdo the tonic! Too much tonic and it will drown out all the nuances of the gin, instead of highlighting them.

Overthinking garnishes. If you think it smells nice and enjoy it in your G& T, then plop it in there!

The Standard Drink: 30ml Of Gin, 40% Alcohol

The majority of alcoholic beverages should be understood in order to properly consume them. A standard drink contains 30 ml gin, 40 percent alcohol, and is served chilled. This equates to a shot of about 1.5 ounces. As a result, if you want to drink a few drinks without getting too drunk, a standard drink is analogous to a shot of spirits or a nip of nip. As far as serving size, the gin is roughly 1.5 ounces in size. As a result, if you intend to drink a lot of gin, you may want to divide your consumption into multiple portions.

    What About The Tonic

It’s not just the gin itself which can have potential health benefits. By adding tonic water to your drink, you potentially gain a few more in the process. Tonic water gets its distinct taste from quinine, and the clue is in the name. It was traditionally believed to be a tonic for all kinds of ailments, and there’s some truth in it.

Quinine is technically a medication and was first located in the bark of a tree found in Peru in the 1820s. It was used as the first line of treatment against malaria and was still used until recently for just that purpose. Gin was drunk with tonic by British people in India in the 19th century to help alleviate the bitter taste of the quinine, but to give the drinker some protection against malaria.

As most of us now don’t have to worry about malaria, what other health benefits does it have? Quinine is still taken today as a treatment against leg cramps*, usually in the form of tablets. Many people who suffer from regular, milder cramps find drinking tonic water helps them reduce their frequency and severity.

How Much Ice Should I Use

More thank you think, according to Stephanie!

I did an experiment the other day and found that the temperature of the liquid can range by five degrees from the top of the glass, where the few sad cubes float, to the bottom where there is no ice, she explains.

Nobody wants to be sipping on a warm G& T, so the most important thing you can do is to fill it right to the brim with ice that way, your drink will stay cold, and your ice will melt more slowly.

And if youre still scrambling around in the back of your freezer for measly cubes, its time for an upgrade.

Stephanie recommends investing in some large silicone ice-cube moulds, which prevent the cube from melting as quickly and watering down your drink. Look for a mould big enough to fill your glass with a single cube.

  • 1Chill your serving glass. Place a short or narrow highball glass into the freezer about 20 minutes before you want to make the cocktail. The glass will become chilled so it keeps your gin and tonic cooler for longer.XResearch source
  • If you prefer a less sweet gin and tonic, consider serving the drink in a short, fat glass. This will give you a stronger gin flavor since you’ll use less tonic water.
  • 2Fill the chilled glass with ice. Get out a handful of clear ice cubes. Place them in the chilled highball glass. The ice should come almost to the top of the glass. If you have time, consider making your own ice cubes using tonic water.XResearch sourceAdvertisement
  • 3Pour the gin over the ice. Measure 2 fl oz of gin into the serving glass filled with ice. You can use a 2-ounce jigger or small measuring cup for accuracy. Use your favorite gin.XResearch source
  • 4Add the tonic water. Measure 34 fl oz of chilled tonic water and slowly pour it into the glass. Try to choose a tonic water that contains real quinine instead of artificial flavoring. Pouring the tonic water slowly will help it keep its carbonation longer.XResearch source

Why I Love This Fantastic Cocktail

  • The insanely short ingredient list. I have never had the luxury of extra space and storage in any of the homes I have lived in, so knowing that I can easily store a bottle of gin away for weekends is pretty awesome.
  • However, my main love comes from the absence of added sugar. Yes, there is sugar in all gin and tonics thanks to the tonic water BUT it is pretty minimal- at least when compared to the oh so popular simple syrup. Now that I am old and I require daily naps, I simply cant party like I used to. In other words, more than one super sugary drink knocks me outfor the week.
  • Finally, the gin and tonic really are so dang easy to make. And easy-to-make alcohol containing beverages that basically make themselves are kinda my favorite.
  • If you try making your own gin & tonic, please leave me a comment and let me know! I always love to hear your thoughts.
