Canadian whisky isnt lighting many fires these days, but that doesnt mean its a static category. Since 2016 Crown Royal has put forth a different annual innovation under its Noble Collection series. Ranging from finishes in red wine and French oak casks to the 13-year-old Blenders Mash and more, the lineup showcases the Gimli, Manitoba distillerys wide range of styles, and offers an inviting perspective on an old standby brand. And, like all Crown Royals, the decanter-like bottles come in a velvety-soft bag, keeping everything nice and polished.
Weller Cypb And Full Proof
Any bottle with the name Weller on it is in high demand these days, but C.Y.P.B. and the 57% abv Full Proof make for particularly precious trophies. C.Y.P.B. resulted from an online poll of Buffalo Trace fans to crowd-source the perfect bourbon which apparently is made with a wheated mashbill, aged for 8 years on the top floors of the warehouse, and bottled at 44.5% abv. Full Proof is bottled without chill-filtration at the same proof at which it entered the barrel. Both bourbons carry a suggested price of $50 but can rarely be had for that IRL.
Old Rip Van Winkle 10 Year Taste & Aftertaste
I first taste a splash of honey, cherry, citrus, dried apple, and marshmallow followed by a lot of cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove, then roasted oak. There really is a lot of cherry, orange, and apple fruitiness as well as ample wood spices that provide a lot of flavor but no bite or harshness.

Always officially released on the birthday of company founder George Garvin Brown but in reality sometimes on shelves a bit earlierBirthday Bourbon ushers in the high season for rare whiskey releases. Each bottling comes from a single day of production and features a unique flavor profile. Over the years, the bourbons age has ranged from 9 to 14 years old, but is usually in the 10-12 range, with proofs varying between 90 and 105. With SRP around $130, getting your hands on a bottle can be tough but is always well worth it.
Which Bottle Does Buffalo Trace Say Is The Best In 2022
While its rare to see a distillery play favorites, Buffalo Traces sensory panel commented this year that the most outstanding bottle of the 2022 collection is the 15-year-old bourbon, which in our opinion is generally considered the under-appreciated middle child anyway.
Sensory experts at Buffalo Trace called it particularly delicious, saying of the whiskey that its, An unbelievably opulent and flawless bourbon that takes wood and distillate to its absolute pinnacle.

Angels Envy Cask Strength + Cellar Collection
Though it appears to be simply an amped-up version of Angels Envys core port-finished bourbon, Cask Strength usually has older whiskey in the mix and spends longer in the finishing casks. The rich, rounded character imparted by the fortified wine makes this dangerously easy to drink, even with a hefty proof thats usually somewhere north of 60% abv. Of course, theres a hefty price tag, too, at $200, but it still doesnt sit on the shelf for long.
Launched in 2019, the Cellar Collection gives Angels Envy an opportunity to try out novel barrel finishes on a small scale. Expressions have included bourbons finished in oloroso sherry, tawny port, and madeira, and a rye finished in ice cider casks a world first. Most of the releases hit shelves in February, though 2021 saw a launch in June, and the distillery says that there isnt a planned pattern for the future.

Buffalo Trace always shares its suggested retail prices for Van Winkle bourbons and rye with the public, perhaps in hopes of promoting market transparency, and perhaps just as a way to cut down on death threats.
In all seriousness, the Van Winkle whiskeys have generally held fair prices at the distiller level for the entire time the brand has existed. Take this year for instance, where the entire line of six whiskeys ranges from a fully affordable $70 to a still-manageable $300 for the most coveted bottle. While that range represents a 13-year age spread, its nevertheless in keeping with comparably aged products on the market today.

Key Ingredients & Abv
Buffalo Trace uses their wheated bourbon mash bill in making the Pappy products, replacing the usual rye mash with wheat mash. Many alcohol enthusiasts believe that using wheat instead of rye results in smoother and sweeter bourbons. The other ingredients are corn and malted barley.
The distillers used Kentucky limestone water before bottling the liquor at varying proofs from 90.4 to 107.
Review: Old Rip Van Winkle 10 Years Old
It has been many years since Drinkhacker reviewed anything with Winkle in its name. With Pappy hysteria season fast approaching, I thought Id take a look at last years release of the entry level Pappy, Old Rip Van Winkle 10 Years Old. Purists may not think of this as Pappy, per se, because of the name, but it is every bit the same wheated mash bill that goes into the older Van Winkle stock. I reviewed this baby Pappy against the more readily available Weller 12 Years Old, which is a close cousin of the Van Winkles older brother, 12 Year Lot B. Confused? Thats potentially the point. Anyway. On to the tasting!
The nose on this one is classic: butterscotch and oak. It intensifies as it opens up with richer caramel and spice notes, but still remains rather straightforward. Compared against the Weller 12, at only 90 proof, theres the expected diminished intensity of a similar aroma. On the palate, Van Winkle 10 Year shows a light, silky body with big baking spice notes, nutmeg and cinnamon stick, and plenty of burnt sugar. The wood is well-integrated, showing some spice on the mid-palate with a warming, easy heat. The finish is sizable and lingers with caramel sauce, butterscotch pudding, and a little orange peel.

Bruichladdich Black Art And Octomore
Among other things, Islays Bruichladdich Distillery is known for its commitment to transparency sharing every possible detail about its whiskies and the fact that most of what it makes is unpeated. So of course its special releases would go against the norm. Black Art , originally created by master distiller Jim McEwan and now overseen by head distiller Adam Hannett, is released with no information other than the age of the youngest whisky in the blend. The , meanwhile, features heavily peated whisky at cask strength. With multiple bottlings in each annual release, this lineup is extremely collectible, even at shelf prices that start around $200.
Woodford Reserve Masters Collection And Masters Collection Batch Proof Double Double Oaked
For years, Woodford Reserve offered its limited-edition Masters Collection once a year in the fall, each whiskey a unique creation from the mind of master distiller Chris Morris: bourbons made with white corn or oats, finished in maple wood, chardonnay, and brandy barrels, and much more. Then in 2019, the distillery added a second Masters Collection release called Batch Proof, a barrel-proof version of the core bourbon, which comes out in the spring. Both whiskies hit the shelf at around $130, and Batch Proof has become especially in-demand.
Taking the trend of double oaking to an extreme, Woodford Reserve matures its flagship bourbon in new charred oak barrels, then transfers it to a second set of new, heavily toasted and lightly charred oak barrels and then to a third. Released after the holidays, this fan-favorite Woodford bourbon is usually available only in Kentucky, though a 2022 sweepstakes offered people nationwide the chance to get their hands on a bottleif they could make it to the distillery for pickup. Half-size bottles mean theres more to go around, but this limited edition still remains fairly elusive.

Handy Sazerac, along with 100-proof Eagle Rare 17-Year-Old and 90-proof Sazerac 18-Year-Old. Technically, Buffalo Trace always releases these with a recommended retail price of $99, but in reality the price whether at retail or on the secondary market is much higher. Each bottle is accompanied by a letter detailing the minutiae of its production, from distillation date to the warehouse floors where its barrels were matured to how much liquid was lost to evaporation.

High West A Midwinter Nights Dram
Luscious, warming, and rich, this barrel-finished rye seemingly flew under the radar for years until, suddenly, everyone wanted it now, youre lucky to find it with the suggested $100 price tag. Jack Daniels 10 Year Old
Launched in 2021 as the first Jack Daniels with a decade of age in more than a century, this Tennessee whiskey is set to roll out annually in limited amounts. It has the same mashbill as Old No. 7 80% corn, 12% malted barley, 8% rye and production was identical in every way except maturation. The barrels for this release spent several years on a top floor before being moved to a bottom floor, near a creek, where cooler temperatures and higher humidity pulled back the throttle on the aging process. That, plus a higher proof than normal Jack, lend the whiskey intense richness and viscosity.
