Uncle Nearest 1884 boasts a familial touch given that Green’s family was personally involved in the blending process. A true treat for whiskey aficionados and history buffs alike, each batch is curated by a descendant of Green. On each bottle of Uncle Nearest 1884, the back label will include a signature of the descendant responsible for crafting that particular batch.

“If my great-great-grandfather were alive today, I know how proud he would be to see us keeping his legacy alive through the continued growth of this brand,” said Victoria Eady-Butler. “When Fawn first agreed to shine a light on our ancestor by putting his name on a bottle, we never could have imagined where Uncle Nearest would be two years later, with people around the world knowing the name Nearest Green. Eady-Butler, who is great-great-granddaughter of Green and also shareholder of Uncle Nearest and its Director of Administration, curated the first batch of Uncle Nearest 1884 bottles.

Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey commemorates the worlds unacknowledged, great whiskey-maker and first African-American master distiller, Nathan Nearest Green. Sounds familiar? Nathan Green is the man who taught Jack Daniel how to make whiskey and is now famous for his Tennessee Whiskey.

It all started with Fawn Weaver, a historian, best-selling author, and entrepreneur who first saw a descendant of Nearest Green on a magazine cover of New York Times International Edition . Eager to know more about the black man beside Jack Daniel and their interconnected history, she ended up buying a 300-acre farm and started the Uncle Nearest whiskey.

Uncle Nearest 1884 Small Batch Whiskey Overall Thoughts And Score

This is tasty and more than I was expecting from this release. Its a whiskey thats great for sipping, great for mixing and even better for sharing. This is a bottle you could have out and your friends would likely enjoy. Its not a challenging whiskey, nor is it a wimpy whiskey. Its a fun whiskey.

Warm and slightly oaky, it opens up with more corn notes and some caramel notes that merge into moments of a caramel corn-like profile. Compared to the toasted sesame seed notes I got in the previous release this is an improvement. If Uncle Nearest 1884 Small Batch Whiskey is the direction theyre headed, count me in for the ride, it looks like it will be delicious.

The Story Of Uncle Nearest

Uncle Nearest was a black slave working in a distillery for Rev. Calls farm. On that same farm, the brilliant Jack Daniels was mentored by Uncle Nearest with his unique charcoal filtering process which was a water-cleaning technique West Africans did. After the Civil War when Green became a free man, Daniels bought the farm and hired Green as his first master distiller.

Uncle Nearest Inc. is a company owned by a Black CEO woman named Fawn Weaver with an all-female executive team since 2017. Weaver isnt related to Green or Daniels she was merely interested in Greens story. But with the help of Daniels descendent, Sherrie Moore, Weaver founded Uncle Nearest Inc. To this day, she works closely with Greens descendent as the Master Blender. Meanwhile, Moore is the Director of Whiskey Production.

How Is Uncle Nearest Whiskey Made

Uncle Nearest is made from corn and rye thats distilled, aged, and bottled in Tennessee at the Nearest Green Distillery. The bourbon whiskey is aged in American oak barrels in a non-temperature-controlled environment and undergoes a post-aging double filtration method.

True to Greens legacy, Uncle Nearest Whiskey still uses the Lincoln County Process. Its the classic method that Green taught Daniels. Its inspired by a common technique used among slaves in West Africa on how they filter their water and purify their food. This filtration technique is what made Uncle Nearests irresistible smoothness.

Uncle Nearest 1884 Small Batch Whiskey Review

An updated look and a, somewhat, updated whiskey: Uncle Nearest 1884 Small Batch Whiskey is no longer sourced from TDG , but distilled completely by the Uncle Nearest team with some help from the folks at TDG where theyve been contract distilling and aging since 2017.

When I visited the distillery in late 2019, the stills werent yet operational and the single-story, on-property, warehouse only contained a prototype rack and a single empty barrel. One of the folks on the tour was from TDG and we talked about the contract distilling, basically renting time on the stills like Wathens, and how they worked with the Uncle Nearest team to dial in their mash bill and create something uniquely theirs.

So is it disingenuous for them to say this is their own distillate? No, plenty of folks contract time at larger distilleries, the end result is still their work, just using someone elses stills. The only reason I bring this is up at all is I wish theyd be a little more clear in their press releases. The way it reads right now sounds like it was distilled and aged at the farm in 2017, which was definitely not the case. Minor point of clarity, but the real question is, how does it taste?

Bourbon Flavor Wheel & Tasting Mats

The new Nearest Green Distillery is a currently in Phase 1 and set on a 270 acre walking horse farm located in Shelbyville, TN on the way to Lynchburg at the former Sand Hill Creek location. The site currently has a retail store, a bottling house, and the Tennessee walking horse experience where guests can learn the history of the walking horse. There is also a tasting area called the Welcome House as well as the Copper Skies Experience where you can enjoy a craft cocktail on the covered porch in one of the numerous rocking chairs while enjoying an unobstructed view of the sunset. The distillery currently offers a Tasting and Hard Hat Tour as well as a weekly Founders Tour.

As a final take away from my experience with the Uncle Nearest brand, their team, and Fawn herself, I have to say that the thing that impressed me the most was their complete transparency and honest answers to every single question I asked. They are not hiding the fact that their product has been sourced while they are currently laying down their own barrels as theyve been contract distilling off site while their distillery gets built. They have been up front about their entire process and dont have anything to hide. Its refreshing to see when so many new brands seem to create a story and hope the public buys in. No matter what, this brand deserves a try based on what they are doing for the local community alone.

Uncle Nearest 1884 Small Batch Whisky

Uncle Nearest 1884 Small Batch Whiskey.

A new distillery in Tennessee, founded in 2017, and named after Nearest Green, a slave worker who became a master distiller and taught a young Jack Daniels how to make Tennessee whiskey back in the 1850s. This included the Lincoln County Process, based on charcoal filtering originally developed in Africa for cleaning water and that he perfected for whiskey.

Presently, the Uncle Nearest whiskies are sourced from other Tennessee distillers, , with hand selected Dickel barrels being blended and bottled for Uncle Nearest. The 1884 Small Batch version reviewed here is the main line product and said to be aged for 7+ years.

More selective versions include the 8 to 14-year-old premium aged whisky 1856 and the single barrel 11+ year old 1820.

The distillery continues with an ambitious expansion plan, with its own stills set to start producing spirit in 2021.

The 1884 Small Batch version was a Gold Medal winner at the 2020 San Francisco Spirits Competition.

Mash bill: 84% corn, 8% rye, 8% barley.

Batch#: No batch identification or year of production on the bottle.

ABV = 46.5%.

Matured: Seven plus years in American oak barrels, char level ?

Cost: $46 / 750ml bottle

Color: Jonguiripe Corn: 0.4 .

Swirl: Slowly developing thin rim with flat shortish legs, not making much progress down the glass.

Finish: Medium length with some dry oak left as the rest of the taste profile fades away.

The 1884 Small Batch Whiskey boasts a bright gold color, fruity & sweet palate , and cinnamon & spice after taste. 1884 has nuanced notes but is relatively a more simple bourbon blend compared to the 1856. Although its enjoyable for drinking neat, it doesnt work well when diluted as the flavors are drowned out. Overall, 1884 makes an enjoyable but forgettable drink on its own, but a superb main attraction for bourbon cocktails.

How Does It Taste

Way more complex than Uncle Nearest 1884! The nose has an opening with orange blossom and kettle corn. Oak spices with toasted oak, tobacco and milk chocolate make it fun. The palate is very creamy with dried fruits, apple pie, carob, maple syrup and spices. The finish is a bit dry with deep aromas like tobacco, coffee and black tea tannins. It is lingering with baking spices.
