Courtesy of Total Wine

Region: Highlands | ABV: 40% | Tasting Notes: Sweet orange, Pear, Apple

Smooth and creamy with an orchard fruit sweetness and an edge of zesty citrus, this special reserve bottle pays tribute to the 1822 founder of The Glenlivet, George Smith, who designed the distillerys distinctive, genies lampshaped copper stills.

Back when Smith was first distilling, age statements were not a part of the scotch game, so Smith blended barrels of all sorts of ages. The Founders Reserve continues that tradition, with the addition of first-fill American oak casks for honeyed caramel undertones.

Is Single Malt Scotch Expensive

Several points in the transcript give an excellent explanation of why single malt whisky is expensive: It takes a long time and a lot of effort to make single malt. Ground barley is added to spring water after it has been ground down. In other words, older whiskeys are expensive because they are rare, not because they are old.

Is Whisky Getting More Expensive

The standard bottlings of Scottish MaltWhiskydistilleries have remained very stable price-wise over the decades. If you consider inflation, the price has even decreased. However, independent bottlings’ and rare Whiskies’ prices are increasing.

Quite regularly, we are asked for the best Whisky available. Mostly this is done by inexperienced people who want to give a Whisky as a present and who want to splash out.

What is the answer to this question? Macallan 25 years or Johnnie Walker Blue Label? Why not Chivas Royal Salute 21 or Bowmore 30 years? Would you rather recommend the older or the more expensive?

Let’s answer this question with a metaphor: a reasonably famous politician was asked by a radio reporter at the opening of a Mercedes branch office, what the best car in the world was. Without thinking much about it he answered Rolls Royce. He made a typical beginner‘s mistake: He transferred his personal wishes and preferences to a question for which there is no generally valid answer.

It’s the same with Whisky: The answer to the question about the best Whisky depends on so many basic conditions that no reasonable solution can be found without asking the customer a number of questions.

Quality, reputation of the distillery and age of a Single Malt Whisky are the most important factors influencing its price.

The Balvenie Double Wood 12

The Balvenie Double Wood spends the first decade of its life in ex-bourbon barrels and hogsheads before being transferred and left for nine more months in ex-Oloroso sherry casks. Next, the whiskies are married in oak tuns for three to four months. The result is sweet fruit and honey on the nose, mellow spice and nuttiness on the palate, and a long finish.

The Price Of Ingredients

Scotch is made from barley. That sounds like a simple statement, but its not. First, many Scottish distilleries will only use Scottish barley, though it has become a bit more common to import barley from England or elsewhere in Europe. Next, only 10 or so strains of barley are approved for distilling by the Institute of Brewing and Distilling. Scotch manufacturers are always in quest of the perfect barley, one high in starch with good enzyme power and the germination ability to create large grains. A lot of barley is required to make a litre of single malt scotch whisky. Talking of that, the malting process itself adds more cost, maltsters are particular about the type of barley they prefer .

Bourbon is made from corn , which is, in general, a lot cheaper than barley dirt cheap, in fact, by comparison. Plus, grain prices in the US are significantly lower than what it costs in Scotland. While some manufacturers may mix in barley or use higher quality corn, the price of the base grain is much cheaper for bourbon compared to single malt scotch.

Here Is A List Of The Worlds Most Expensive Scotch Whisky

Whisky expert Charles MacLean with the worldÕs rarest and most valuable whisky – a bottle of … The Macallan Valerio Adami 60 year-old 1926 with an estimate of £700,000-900,000. Ahead of the Bonhams upcoming Whisky Sale at their Edinburgh auction house, which is set to feature the worldÕs rarest and most valuable whisky – a bottle of The Macallan Valerio Adami 60 year-old 1926 with an estimate of £700,000-900,000.

Last October, a single bottle of scotch shattered the record for most expensive wine or spirit ever sold at auction. The Macallan Fine and Rare 60-Year-Old fetched a staggering $1.9 million USD. Why so much? Well, the 1926 vintage malt was drawn from a legendary barrel, prized by collectors for its near-mystical characteristics. Just a year earlier, liquid matured in that same oak sold for $1.2 million at a London auction house. Since 2018, no less than six examples of that 1926 spirit have cleared the million dollar threshold.

In total, only 40 bottles were produced from the esteemed cask known simply as number 263. The next time one goes under the hammer, expect it to command a new high mark. It was supposed to happen this April, as part of an expansive trove of prizes deemed the Perfect Collection. Before it could close, however, online seller Whisky Auctioneer was the unfortunate victim of a targeted cyber attack.
