Is Hennessy Cognac A Brandy

Cognac Review: Hennessy Very Special VS

Hennessy Cognac is a type of brandy. As a liquor made from fermented fruit juice, “brandy” is referred to as a spirit distilled from a variety of fruits, including grapes. To be classified as cognac, however, the grapes used must originate from the Cognac area in western France. Which is known for its production of white wines.

The finished product is aged in French oak barrels after it has been fermented and distilled twice. With its nutty and toasted qualities, wood enhances Cognac’s deeper aromas of soft fruit, vanilla, and spice. The brandy’s oak flavor is modest.

The Alphabet Is Your Guide To Hennessy

Standard to high-end brandies and Cognacs, Hennessy bottles feature a combination of letters to indicate the quality of the liquid inside. Most common is V.S., which stands for Very Special. Other labelings include V.S.O.P,. or Very Special Old Pale, and X.O., which stands for Extra Old. Though these indicators may appear confusing at first glance, this handy guide simplifies Cognacs labeling and makes choosing the right bottle easier than ever.

Hennessy Invested In The African American Community

According to VinePair, African Americans are the major proponents of Hennessy Cognac. It all began when African American soldiers returned from France after the world wars having developed a taste for cognac . After the war, scotch began to be marketed to French consumers, causing cognac producers to look toward U.S. markets to make up for the decrease in revenues.

In the 1950s, Hennessy began advertising in magazines geared toward Black Americans such as Ebony and Jet these were the first advertisements of their kind in America at the time. Hennessy didn’t just advertise to the African American community, they invested in it. VinePair notes that the company also began hiring African Americans into leadership positions in the company. Herb Douglass, a bronze medal Olympian from Pittsburgh, PA, was the vice president of urban market development. He was the third African American man to acquire this kind of position in a leading business.

Hennessy Vs: A Cognac Tour De Force

Cognac Hennessy V.S. Very Special

Representing centuries of Cognac making, Hennessy Cognac VS is a timeless icon: true to its origins, but always looking to the future. 40 different eaux-de-vie from across all Cognac regions are used in the blend, with a minimum age of two years and some aged up to five.

To create the eaux-de-vie for Hennessys signature, the finest Ugni Blanc grapes are selected, fermented and distilled twice in copper pot stills, known locally as alembic charentais. While some producers choose to distil their spirit with grape skins and other types of sediment, Hennessy removes this to create a lighter and more delicate Cognac. After distillation, only the best eaux-de-vie will be selected during tasting sessions held by a select committee of experts, with the final blend crafted by Hennessys eighth-generation master blender, Renaud Fillioux de Gironde.

Maison Hennessy uses casks of French Limousin oak to age their VS Cognac, imparting a robust, nutty note to complement the light and fruity grape characteristics. Before they even get to touch the spirit, the wood for the casks has been left outside for several years, exposing it to the changing seasons to reduce bitter flavors and develop a natural vanilla sweetness.

While all the parts of the blend have to be at least two years old, the master blender also chooses older casks to impart depth and balance – the aim is certainly not to produce the cheapest cognac out there.

The Process Of Creation

Even hundreds of years after its founding, the Hennessy V.S, along with all other cognacs, is made in Cognac, France . The V.S Cognac is made from ugni blanc grapes, which are harvested and turned into a low alcohol white wine . The wine production process for cognacs begins in October, when grapes are typically harvested, pressed, and fermented for five to seven days .

The wine is then taken to one of three Hennessy distilleries, all of which have 10 traditional copper stills each. Unlike wine that is intended for bottling and consumption, Cognac wine goes into the distillation process still cloudy, with the lees, or the juice and the pulp, still present, which adds body to the liquid. Cognac is generally distilled twice. The distillation process spans from November to March. Following distillation, the cognac is transferred into oak barrels to age for at least two years.

It Survived Prohibition As A Prescription Medicine

The American policy of prohibition was enforced from 1920 to 1933 and made it became illegal to sell or consume alcohol . Breweries and alcohol producers during this time had to find new ways to make money just to stay afloat . Some breweries started selling malt syrup and yeast.

Wineries began selling grapes and raisins to customers . Several wineries made wine specifically for religious practices since this was one of the few exceptions to the prohibition. Producers of hard liquors had to get more creative, though. Doctors during the prohibition frequently wrote prescriptions for alcohol . During the time, alcohol was thought to aid health issues such as indigestion and cancer.

Hennessy, of course, was intent on surviving and wanted in on the action. Thankfully William Schiefflin offered Hennessy as a prescription option at his drugstore, which enabled the brand’s continued success. Eventually, Schiefflin gave up the pretense, and Schiefflin & Co. became a key liquor distributor .
