Heaven Hill Old Style Bourbon

The 30 Best Bourbon Brands For 2022

Heaven Hill Old Style Bourbon Review

Bourbon continues to rank among the most popular distilled spirits in the United States and its not just sales seeing a spike. As the number of producers in the country goes from strength to strength, so too does the range of styles in the category, with distillers turning to innovative fermentation and aging techniques, as well as left-field grains to stand out.

The tasting for VinePairs 2022 edition of our annual bourbon roundup offered great insight into how broad and deep the category has grown. Among the more than 150 bottles considered, we sampled brands from across the country, and encountered more craft expressions than ever before.

Speaking of craft, a large portion of the bottles considered this year came from independent brands that source their whiskey from Indiana . While this practice has been looked down upon by some in the past, the majority of brands employing that strategy now are increasingly transparent about their whiskeys origins. Producers in that field who made it onto this list did so by taking the spirit in a new direction via a finishing technique or proprietary aging process, or by blending with their own whiskey and achieving harmonious results.

With all that said, here are 30 of the best bourbons to drink in 2022.

The Best Bourbons Under $100

Field & Sound Bottled in Bond Bourbon Whiskey

Produced on Long Island, this high-rye bourbon utilizes locally grown grains and sweet mash fermentation. If the heavy maritime influence, prominently referenced on the bottles label, is at all detectable, its via subtle saline notes on the nose and finish. More abundant is the attractive spice of winter rye, and bold, heady vanilla and caramel notes on the palate. This is a great craft option. Average price: $50. Rating: 92.

Old Forester The 117 Series 1910 Extra Old

Old Foresters 1910 Old Fine Whisky sees a secondary period of maturation in heavily charred oak barrels. This, the third release in the distillerys limited-edition The 117 Series, offers drinkers a glimpse at how that whiskey evolves with an extra 18 months in oak. Pouring a deep shade of maple, it exudes dark sugar and chocolate aromas, and delivers rich doses of caramel on the palate. Available from late February onward, this gift-shop and online exclusive merits the extra effort to seek out. MSRP: $50. Rating: 93.

Angels Envy Kentucky Straight Bourbon Finished In Port Wine Barrels

Finished for 3 to 6 months in port wine casks, this Angels Envy release is blended in batches of around a dozen barrels. The red wine influence stands out but doesnt overwhelm, instead complementing attractive chocolate, caramelized nut, and vanilla notes. Average price: $52. Rating: 92.

Nose: A classic bourbon opening of brioche and caramel. Added to that is a woodsy underpinning of sandalwood and a wisp of smoke. It evolves through a range of sweets: amaretto, coconut macaroons, and cream soda. Gooseberry, quince, and lime cordial add a bit of lift. A range of mineral notes round it out with flint, limestone, and beeswax.

Heaven Hills Popular Green Label Bourbon Discontinued

According to reports, the legendary Heaven Hill Green Label Bourbon is no longer available. Six-year bottled bonds are one of the most popular products, but they are only available in Kentucky, the distillerys home state. The Green Label is a sign that the product is of the same quality as the other one but at a lower price. Despite being a relatively inexpensive bourbon, it remains one of the most popular on the market. The Black Label is most popular, but the Green Label is also a good option for a budget-minded buyer.

Heaven Hill Old Style Bourbon Review

Heaven Hill Old Style Bourbon (No Bull$h!t Bourbon Review)

According to most reviewers, Heaven Hill Old Style Bourbon is a solid, middle-of-the-road bourbon. Its got a nice, smooth flavor with a bit of a kick, and its affordable, which makes it a great choice for budget-minded bourbon drinkers. There are, of course, a few detractors, who find the flavor a bit too bland or the kick a bit too weak. But overall, this is a solid bourbon that should please most drinkers.

Heaven Hill has an Old-World charm to it. Despite being smooth and refreshing, bourbon is not overly complex. The nose contains distinct oak flavors, such as oak fruit, oak wood, and oak wood. Throughout, there is a hint of nuttiness. Is this Whiskey at around $10 a barrel good for drinking? Heaven Hill is a high-quality home built in the traditional style. When you drink Bourbon in Manhattan, there is more of it. The drink is clearly bourbon-based, but the flavors are more oak and spice. This is an excellent value for a very modest bourbon, costing around $12 per liter.

Does Bourbon Require An Age Statement

Bourbon aged in new charred oak barrels must be aged no higher than 125 proof during the distillation process and made with at least 51% corn. Straight Bourbon must be aged for at least two years in order to mature properly.

There is no longer any sense that a whiskys age equates to its quality. Blending old stocks with new to create expressions that convey a higher level of maturity than an age statement would. Bourbon must be stored in a newly constructed charred oak vessel. Vaults Blend of Straights has a milkshake-like smoothness and depth, as well as deeper flavors of baked red berries, blackberries, and cinnamon-Chocolate babka. David Fleming Barrells 16 year old Gold Label contains orange slices studded with clove, bubble gum, cream soda, and chocolate cake layers sprinkled with cocoa powder. Shane English ruled the Redwood Empire. The 5-year-old Grizzly Beast Bottled in Bond is rated 89 percent, 50 percent, and 80 percent.

More Information

SKU

The Heaven Hill Old Style Bourbon Whiskey is produced at the Heaven Hill Bernheim distillery in Louisville, Kentucky. The manufacturer of this dram is the second-largest holder of bourbon whiskey in the world and still owned by the founders family.

This Kentucky straight bourbon has a full aroma of vanilla, caramel, maize, green apple, nutmeg and a little spiciness. On the palate the spirit shows vanilla and apple notes, sweet caramel, an oaky spiciness, traces of cinnamon, nutmeg and even nuances of bananas. During the finish the sweet fruitiness is fading out.

The Heaven Hill Old Style matured at least for four years in new charred oak casks. They are made of American white oak. Charring the casks before use is an important step, which has a direct influence on the character of the bourbon. By coaling the barrels the wood sugar is caramelised and the structure of the wood is opened. Thus, the exchange between cask and spirit is more intense. Typically, those casks create a sweet vanilla flavour and a mild character.

Heaven Hill is a family-owned company that was founded in 1935, two years after the prohibition ended. In the beginning it was named Old Heavenhill Springs. Today the company has a wide portfolio of brands and different kinds of spirits that are traded around the world.

Following In The Footsteps

Weve always been family-owned and operated by the Shapira family. That independence has allowed us to uphold our own standards, adhering to the same values instilled by those who started Heaven Hill. In 1935, Heaven Hill put its first whiskey into barrels, but it wasnt until four years later, in 1939, that we released the original Old Heaven Hill Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon. That singular decisionto be patient and allow the whiskey to properly maturewas tough, but it paid off. The whiskey quickly became the number-one-selling Bourbon in the state of Kentucky. Those lessons of patience and perseverance continue to drive Heaven Hill today.

Heaven Hill Bourbon Whiskey Variations

Heaven Hill Quality House Old Style Bourbon

Heaven Hill Bourbon produces two variations with particular flavor and age profiles. Each one of the offerings has a unique selling point:

1.Heaven Hill Bottled-in-Bond Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

This expression pays tribute to the earliest days of Bottled-in-Bond. The name is mercifully shortened as the Heaven Hill Bottled in Bond or B n B. Not only is it relatively available, but its also damn cheap for what it is and readily available to mere mortals.

This whiskey has aromas of vanilla, caramel, and aged oak with a long cinnamon spice finish and a caramel sweetness in a perfect balance.

2.Heaven Hill Bourbon Blended Whiskey

Unlike the Heaven Hill Bourbon, which is 100% straight and can only be made with uncut natural ingredients i.e, corn, malted barley, and rye, Heaven Hill Blended whisky employs a less expensive and broader range of ingredients and production methods.

Its made up of 20% straight bourbon and 80% neutral grain spirits these are similar to grain alcohol with no color or smell. Neutral grain spirits can be aged in used oak barrels or not aged at all. On the other hand, Heaven Hill Straight Bourbon MUST be aged a minimum of 2 years in new charred oak barrels.
