Courvoisier Cognac The Brandy Of Napoleon Price

Courvoisier Price Sizes & Buying Guide

Courvoisier Napoleon Cognac | Tasted and reviewed

Courvoisier is a cognac that is produced in the town of Jarnac in the Charente region of France.

Courvoisier is the youngest of the big four cognac houses having been founded in 1828 by Felix Courvoisier. The other cognac houses are Hennessy, Remy Martin, and Martell.

Courvoisier differs from the other big cognac houses as its distilling operation is a small part of its production. Courvoisier has contracts with over a thousand wine-making families and distillers.

The product received from these distillers all has different qualities and styles due to the variety of soils, stills, and cellars of the contracted distillers.

Courvoisier considers this to be their strength as it leads to a broad range of tastes and styles from which to blend.

Courvoisier Brandy: A Brief Background

The liquor has a rich history born when Emmanuel Courvoisier and Louis Gallois developed it in 1809. Soon after, the beverage would become the flavor of the ruling class in society. Napoleon Bonaparte was particularly fond of the Courvoisier.

This brand was also the one distributed at the grand opening of the Eiffel Tower. This is a testament to the grandeur of these world-class spirits from France, in levels that shame those of wine and beer. To date, its been featured in films like Diamonds are Forever and rapped about by the likes of P Diddy and Busta Rhymes, which is proof of its world-class review.

It May Be The Original Napoleon Brandy But Courvoisier Cognac Has Managed To Establish A Thoroughly Modern Appeal Heres How It Achieved Its World

*This feature was originally published in the December 2014 issue of The Spirits Business magazine

Cognac has always been an aspirational spirit in the way it is packaged, priced and promoted, particularly when you get beyond VSOP. This was distilled into just seven words in 2004 in a UK advert for Courvoisier XO: Dont just stand there drooling. Get rich.

With more than a nod to Wall Streets Gordon Gekko, the ad made no mention of Napoleon. The French emperor has been the brands inspiration since he visited the cellars of Emmanuel Courvoisier and Louis Gallois in 1811, two years after they had set up as wine and spirits merchants in the Parisian suburb of Bercy. According to company folklore he liked the Cognac so much he took some with him on exile after his defeat at Waterloo.

Its one of the most beautiful and moving stories, says Francois Balzini, VP marketing, Europe, Middle East & Africa, for brand-owner Beam Suntory. When Napoleon was exiled to St. Helena in the mid-Atlantic in 1815, he took his boat to La Rochelle and on the way, stopped at Jarnac and picked up a few barrels. It was his desert island spirit.

The business moved from Bercy to Jarnac in 1828, and before long the new generation were doing well enough to build a grand château on the banks of the Charente that is still Courvoisiers HQ. Yet it was only in 1909, when the firm was bought by the Anglo-French Simon family, that Courvoisier really began to dine out on Napoleon.

After being founded in 1809 by Emmanuel Courvoisier and Louis Gallois, it wasnt long before Courvoisier became a favorite among the upper echelons of society.

It was purportedly a favorite of Napoléon Bonaparte, who, after visiting the Courvoisier cellars, demanded that a ration of the Cognac was given to his troops to keep up morale. He also took a generous supply of bottles with him into exile on St. Helena following his defeat at Waterloo.

Napoléon III was equally partial to Courvoisier, granting it the title of Official Supplier to the Imperial Court in 1869. Whats more, the spirits popularity extended across the Channel. It is said that, when he died, writer Charles Dickens was found to be in possession of 216 bottles of Courvoisier.

And, at the opening ceremony of the Eiffel Tower in 1889the beginning of Paris Golden Age, or Belle ÉpoqueCourvoisier was the drink of celebration.

Brandy Vs Cognac: Whats The Difference

Courvoisier Napoleon Cognac National Cognac Day Review

By now, youve probably noticed that Courvoisier refers to their spirits as cognac, not brandy. But whats the difference? Brandy and cognac are effectively the same thing, but cognac is a very specific type of brandy. Cognac is produced in the region of Cognac, France, and only brandy made in this area is allowed to be cognac .

Cognacs are held to a very strict and specific distilling process, which often results in higher retail prices due to how exclusive bottles are. In fact, the distilling process is so specific that theres even a particular type of grape that Courvoisier must use in order for their spirits to qualify as cognac. Their cognac is distilled in copper distillers and then aged in oak barrels for several years to draw out the smooth flavors of the wood.

This paved the way for them to relocate in France and mark the history of Courvoisier brandy. Since then, the craft production of Courvoisier did not change even after 200 years have passed.
