About Cherry Street Pier

The vision of Cherry Street Pier is to provide a vibrant, collaborative home for Philadelphias most visionary artists and entrepreneurs. It strives to facilitate meaningful civic engagement and community building, and act as a public destination that is inspiring, enlightening, and universally accessible. Ultimately, Cherry Street Pier hopes to serve as a model for community partners and public space providers to help better understand how civic assets can support and tap into entrepreneurial energy.

Formerly known as Municipal Pier 9, Cherry Street Pier is a 65,000 square foot warehouse and former shipping pier which was once a vibrant part of Philadelphias shipping industry. After decades of vacancy, the Pier has been carefully repurposed to preserve and celebrate its historic value including the original railroad tracks, steel trussed roof, and masonry headhouses. Cherry Street Pier is located just south of the Race Street Pier and along North Columbus Boulevard.

While visiting Cherry Street Pier, enjoy their second full summer season with a new resident artist cohort. After a competitive application process that included interviews and portfolio reviews, a brand-new artist cohort has also taken residence at the Pier. These artists represent the breadth and depth of Philadelphias creative entrepreneurship community. The class of 2020 includes established arts collectives, emerging mixed media specialists, and many more:

Beer Gardens Pop Up On The Waterfront For Philly River Stroll

    By July 24, 2020

The Water Garden at Spruce Street Harbor Park offers socially distant dining for up to 125 people. Reservations are required and guests are limited to a two-hour stay.

Are you on the front lines of the coronavirus? Help us report on the pandemic.

The summertime amenities that pop up along the Delaware waterfront in Philadelphia are a draw every year however 2020 is not like other years. The Delaware River Waterfront Corporation wants the rivers edge to be popular, but not too popular. During a pandemic, nobody wants to see crowds.

The Spruce Street Harbor Park opened quietly this summer with little fanfare. The hammocks strung between trees are gone. The beer garden on floating barges requires reservations in advance. There are no concerts or large events programmed.

The DRWC is being careful not to bring in anything too enticing.

We are purposefully being more strategic about how we message and tell people how to enjoy the waterfront, said the DRWC director of communications, Almaz Crowe. We have not programmed any concert or large event that will bring in large crowds. We realize this is a disappointment to some. We want to see people enjoying themselves, but it will be on a much, much smaller scale.

The Delaware River Waterfront Corporation has all these wonderful public spaces, but public space is not our friend at this time, said Hornik.
