Brandi Carlileis an American singer-songwriter and 6-time Grammy Award winner who writes predominantly rock, folk, and pop music. Originally from Washington state, she rose to fame in 2007 when the title track of her album The Story was featured on the hit television series Greys Anatomy. Brandi Carlile Enlists Sam Smith For Party Of One Duet
Brandi Carlile teams up with U.K. singer-songwriter Sam Smith for a new duet version of her song Party of One. A graceful piano ballad, the original appears as the final track on Carliles latest album, .
Carlile and Smith recorded the song with producer Dave Cobb at Capitol Studios in Los Angeles. The new recording, which features the two singers trading off verses and harmonizing during the chorus, includes a new orchestral introduction and an added layer of strings throughout the songs first several verses.
In a statement, Carlile said that Party of Oneis a song about deep and enduring compassion. Its about trying to navigate domesticity, love and particularly marriage whilst being willed to fail by those that would revoke that right if they could.
I am so excited for everyone to have this song in their ears and hearts, Smith added. Working with Brandi Carlile is truly one of the highlights of my career. Her voice and songwriting get me through the dark days.
Carlile and Smith first met through their individual work with the organization Children in Conflict, which provides support to children affected by war. A portion of the proceeds of Party of One will be donated to the organization.
Carlile recently sat for an intimate Morning Sessions interview with Rolling Stone at the Austin City Limits Festival in Austin in which she discussed her songwriting, meeting Lady Gaga and her concerns about a conservative U.S. Supreme Court.

Carlile takes us in a whirlwind of emotions in Party of One. The soft arrangement of the piano lulls us in an almost-comfortable head space, before dropping us in the middle of what seems to be a conflict between two people.
The 3-time Grammy Award winner perfectly portrays the conflict and rocky resolution in her song. She perfectly captures the feelings of empathic understanding of being alone during a conflict with a significant other, as well as the frustrations that one feels.
In retrospect, the lyrics talk about the turbulence each relationship has. Whether it be romantic, familial, or platonic, there can never be a strong relationship without some type of conflict. And even if we are heavily devoted to them, none of us are immune to being exhausted or frustrated about the person or the situation. But that doesnt mean that we should abandon them.
At the end of the song, Carlile acknowledges that the resolution for the conflict would involve with her stepping back. However, she also hints at her return because of her allusions that she is home, and conflicts do happen, but she will always come back.
Carlile is a three-time Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter. She has earned seven Grammy Award nominations, six for her current album, . This album won her a Grammy Award for Best Americana Album, as well as being nominated for Album of the Year in the 2019 Grammy Awards.
