Brandi Carlile Joni Mitchell Concert

Brandi Carlile On Her Upcoming Shows With Joni Mitchell

Joni Mitchell âCareyâ? with Brandi Carlile Live at Newport Folk Festival, Sunday, July 24, 2022

During their chat, Trevor Noah and Brandi Carlile discussed Joni Mitchells iconic set at Newport. When those types of moments happen, you know everyone goes, Oh you should have been there, youll never get to see it again. But, Ive heard a little whisper that maybe something might happen, Noah said. Carlile began to laugh as he finished the sentence.

Yeah. We get to talk about this right now, she said excitedly. So, after Newport, Joni said, I want to do another show. She said, I want to play again. And we got to thinking about it and we decided on a venue which is the Gorge out in Washington state, Brandy Carli said. Its one of the most beautiful venues in the world.

Then, Carlile gave some details about her shows with Joni Mitchell. Its called Echoes Through the Canyon. Im going to play the first night. Joni and the Joni Jam will play the second night and Im going to open up. Its going to be June 9th and 10th at the Gorge.

The weight of the occasion isnt lost on Brandi Carlile. This will mark Mitchells first non-festival concert in two decades. No one has been able to buy a ticket to see Joni Mitchell play in 20 years. So, this is enormous I cant believe its happening, but its happening and she is going to crush it.

Ticket sales and a complete lineup for the shows will be announced at a later date.

Brandi Carlile Sings A Case Of You

Brandi Carlile appeared recently on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to discuss her new memoir Broken Horses… and to tease the possibility of playing Mitchell’s entire Blue album, live, in concert again. Famously, Carlile performed the album in its entirety back in 2019 at the Disney Concert Hall. According to NPR, Carlile kicked off the night by announcing: “We didn’t live in the time of Shakespeare, Rembrandt or Beethoven. But we live in the time of Joni Mitchell.” A knockout quote. Sadly, there are no official recordings of Carlile’s iconic tribute. But perhaps we can expect another showing soon.

For now, Carlile is tiding us over with her cover of “A Case of You,” which she performed for Stephen Colbert, accompanied by her signature acoustic guitar. Enjoy that rendition above, and add it to your folk playlists!

Carlile revealed the news on an episode of The Daily Show. In the wake of this summers surprise Mitchell concert at the Newport Folk Festival, Carlile said that Joni told her, I want to do another show. She said, I want to play again.

The pair chose the 27,000-capacity Gorge, which Carlile noted is one of the most beautiful venues in the world. Brandi will play the first night, 9 June and Joni and the Joni Jam line-up to be announced will headline the second night .

Joni Mitchell is going to play. No ones been able to buy a ticket to see Joni Mitchell play in 20 years, Carlile noted of the artist who hadnt performed a full live set since 2000 before Newport and hadnt appeared in public much since suffering a brain aneurysm in 2015. So this is enormous and she is going to crush it!

I still cant believe that happened, Carlile told The Daily Show host Trevor Noah of the performance in the summer. It was just a few months ago and the fact that it was at Newport Folk Festival, which is such a monumental and historic place. She always has a plan. She knows what she wants to do even if she doesnt say it.

We thought it was a jam. We didnt know that she was going to sing all the leads on those songs, Carlile said of Mitchells performance. She just started singing. We had rehearsed the songs ourselves. And we didnt know whether we should stop or what we should do, you know, so we just sang with her.

After helping coax Joni Mitchell back onto the public concert stage for the first time in nine years in July at the Newport Folk Festival, Brandi Carlile has pulled off the impossible once again. The two artists will perform June 9-10 at the Gorge Amphitheatre in George, Wash., with Carlile headlining the first night and then backing Mitchell the next night for a reprise of the Newport Joni Jam.

Carlile broke the news during an interview yesterday with Trevor Noah on The Daily Show, first by reflecting back on the Newport experience.

I still cant believe that happened, she said. always has a plan. She knows what she wants to do, even if she doesnt say it. We didnt know she was going to do that. We thought it was a jam. We didnt know that she was going to sing all the leads on those songs. She just started singing! Wed rehearsed the songs ourselves and we didnt know whether we should stop or what we should do, you know? So we just sang with her, and then it turns out, she completely took over the show and became the performer that we all know that she is. We didnt go to sleep that night. We stayed up til the sun came up, just loving what happened. Joni flat-out loves to perform, and shes awesome at it. Shes every bit as good at it now as she was.

Brandi Carlile Announces Two Concerts With Joni Mitchell In 2023

Joni Mitchell is an icon among folk singers. During her decades-long career, Mitchell helped to shape modern American folk music and inspired countless artists. Unfortunately, the 10-time Grammy winner stopped performing two decades ago. Then, in 2015, she suffered a brain aneurysm that nearly took her life. Earlier this year, Joni shocked the world when she took the stage at the Newport Folk Festival. She and Brandi Carlile presided over a Joni Jam, with a killer group of musicians. No one knew that Mitchell planned to sing the entire set.

That iconic performance marked Joni Mitchells first live performance in more than two decades. Fans around the world rejoiced at the thought of seeing Mitchell on the stage once again. Many hoped that it hinted at future live shows from the legendary singer. Last night, Brandi Carlile announced that she and Mitchell will play two shows in 2023, granting the wishes of countless fans. Dont it always seem to go that you dont know what youve got till its gone?

That helps explain why many were so excited when Joni Mitchell gave a surprising performance in July at the Newport Folk Festival. Now, according to fellow singer Brandi Carlile, the legendary artist will once again take to the stage.

During an appearance on The Daily Show that aired Wednesday, Carlile announced that Mitchell is scheduled to join her at the Echoes Through the Canyon shows in June 2023 at the Gorge Amphitheatre in Washington state.

After Newport, Joni said I want to do another show. She said I want to play again, Carlile told Daily Show host Trevor Noah.

No ones been able to buy a ticket to see Joni Mitchell play in 20 years, she continued. So this is enormous, and shes so excited because its close to Canada.

Mitchell, 78, suffered a brain aneurysm in 2015 and has mostly been out of the public eye since then.

She and Carlile are close friends, with Mitchell introducing her at the annual Grammy Awards earlier this year.

Joni Mitchell To Play First Headline Show In 23 Years

Joni Mitchell will return to the stage in June 2023 for her first headline concert in decades, Brandi Carlile said on yesterdays episode of The Daily Show. Carlile, who joined Mitchell for her surprise set at Newport Folk Festival in July, told Trevor Noah she would perform her own set at Washingtons Gorge Amphitheatre next June, and that Mitchell would headline the following night, on June 10.

Carlile said Mitchell has been hosting Joni Jams with other musicians for years, as part of her recovery from her 2015 brain aneurysm it was Mitchell, she added, who came to Carlile expressing a desire to play live. Her last proper headline shows took place during a 2000 tour of America , though she delivered a handful of seemingly ad hoc performances in the intervening years.

In recent years, Mitchell has re-emerged into public life after a long withdrawal due to health problems. In 2015, she stepped back after the aneurysm affected her ability to speak and walk, only reappearing three years later at a tribute concert celebrating her 75th birthday. James Taylor hinted in a 2020 interview with The Guardian that Mitchell was working on a new album. The album has not yet come, but Mitchell has since been honored as MusiCares Person of the Year at the Grammys , received an honorary doctorate from Berklee College of Music, made that Newport Folk Festival appearance, and then discussed it on CBS Mornings.
