Blanton’s Straight From The Barrel Smell

Blantons Straight From The Barrel is big and bold right off the bat with dense and earthy caramel and maple syrup, followed by syrupy peach, very dry apple coated in cinnamon, caraway seed that reminds me of baked pumpernickel bread, rosemary, dried apricot, vanilla, and dried orange peel.

At this point, Blantons Straight From The Barrel is a big caramel, maple syrup, and caraway seed hammer that I cant help but think is somewhat one-dimensional because those notes come first, second, and third.

The heat also isnt that bad for 64.6%, but then again it sat in the glass for about 2 hours because I was busy. This really benefited from air in the bottle to calm some of that heat. To no surprise, it was raging bull for a while, but has come down quite a bit over time. Since it needs time to be ready, dont pass judgement on the first smell from a freshly opened bottleit might be good.

I normally swirl whiskey for the second go-around, but I dont dare to do it this time in fear of the heat. So without swirling, I get similar scents of earthy caramel and maple syrup, caraway seed, gingersnap, cinnamon, dried peach / apricot / apple / orange, toasted oak thats not burnt, and cinnamon. This time, I smell a lot more of this dark candied gingersnap cookie, which is very Fall-like. I adore gingersnap cookies.

Blanton’s Straight From The Barrel Rating

While Ive give Blantons Straight From The Barrel a Top Shelf rating, Im still not entirely sure what to make of it. Its an absolute earthy, sweet and gingersnap bomb that wont leave you wanting for more. The flavors and oiliness absolutely hammer my tastebuds, sort of like George T Stagg 2015-ish, but with far less oakiness and depth.

On the other hand , is how it occasionally teeters on one-dimensional. As a result, I dont absolutely adore it and dont feel strongly compelled to get another one. It just doesnt have the same impact as the 1993 Blantons Red I reviewed, which was 46.5% ABV, very nuanced, and the best Blantons Single Barrel Bourbon Ive ever had.

I made a similar one-dimensional-related comment about Old Forester Single Barrel Barrel Proof. But unlike that, Blantons SFTB is more mature and developed. It dosent have that youthful graininess and still has more nuance and fruit, which is why its a Top Shelf bourbon and Old Forester Barrel Proof isnt.

Now back to my earlier point about Woodinville. The earthy sweetness and background fruitiness reminds me of Woodinville Cask Strength Bourbon and even Wild Turkey Rare Breed Non Chill Filtered Bourbon. You know what, I bet Blantons SFTB and Wild Turkey Rare Breed NCF are quite similar, so Ill compare them to verify that. I am especially curious of the outcome because Rare Breed NCF is excellent and so much cheaper.

Blantons Straight From The Barrel

Today, the 93 proof US version is all weve got here while other countries overseas get to enjoy a variety of Blantons bottled at different proofs. Today, I have a Blantons Straight From The Barrel which, as it sounds, is a barrel that has had nothing done to it beyond basic sediment filtration. In fact, something thats not talked about nearly enough is how this is the only Blantons product that has not been chill filtered. And since a hallmark of Blantons bottles are that they are all single barrels, the proof on the SFTB bottles differ. Ive seen some as low as 124 proof and some as high as 138 proof.

The bottle Im reviewing today is 126.7 proof and was bottled on March 28, 2019. It came to me courtesy of a fantastic neighbor friend of mine who recently came back from a vacation in Germany. No age statement is provided on these bottles, but with Blantons huge surge in popularity, its believed that these barrels are younger than ever. This one may even be around the 6 year old mark. So how does the monster of all Blantons taste? Lets dive in to see. I sampled this neat and in a Glencairn.

Blanton’s Single Barrel Bourbon – Straight From The Barrel – Whisky And BBQ

In the winter of 1881, Albert Bacon Blanton was born on a farm situated just outside of Frankfort, Kentucky. At the age of 16, Blanton began working at the Old Fire Copper Distillery as an office boy. Over the next few years, Blanton reportedly worked in every department at the distillery. By the age of 20, he was appointed the superintendent of O.F.C, and worked there until his retirement in 1952.

Much like his mentor, E.H. Taylor, Blanton was a traditional bourbon aristocrat, wedded to the production of Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey. Blanton identified a certain section of Warehouse H at his distillery, which he believed was the best for aging bourbon, and would personally select individual barrels from the section to bottle for his own private reserve.

Today, Blantons Original Single Barrel Bourbon Whiskey is still aged in the same section of Warehouse H as Blantons Private Reserve was over 50 years ago. Made from a unique mash bill of corn, rye for spice, and malted barley. This bourbon is aged in white oak and bottled uncut and unfiltered. This special single barrel and cask strength release varies in ABV, ranging from 62% to 67%.

Blanton’s Straight From The Barrel Overview

Ive reviewed quite a few versions of Blantons so far , and Im finally getting around to doing a Blantons Straight from the Barrel review. And FYI, Ill end up using Blantons SFTB at times because it is so much shorter.

For a refresher, Blantons Straight From The Barrel is a cask strength bourbon from Buffalo Trace, and is supposedly ~6 years old. And just like all other Blantons, its single barrel, meaning that no other barrels were blended into it. Theres the chance for something great, but you might get something terrible , because you cant blend away / hide the bad.

While most have to wait in line and/or pay a markup to get Blantons SFTB in the US, Japan operates a bit differently . I casually walked into a BIC Camera and found this solo bottle of SFTB for 12,000 yen . If you were wondering, this bottle was dumped on 8/18/2020 from barrel 148, and rick number 10.

On the topic of Blantons in Japan, heres more background. Regular Blantons, Black, and Red are not so difficult to find in Japan far easier to find than regular Blantons in the US. Its usually stocked in larger stores and on Amazon. On the other end, Gold, Takara Gold , and Straight from the Barrel are a bit more limited, but by no means ultra allocated. A few stores, and Amazon on occasion, will also have these.

Colonel Albert Bacon Blanton

Colonel Albert Bacon Blanton was born on a farm near the distillery in 1881. In 1897, at the young age of 16, Colonel Blanton was hired as a clerk at the distillery. As he grew older he became very familiar with the distillerys operations, working in every department. He started as an office boy at the age of 16, and finally in 1921 he was in charge of the entire operation becoming President of the distillery. Colonel Blantons hands-on experience in all aspects of the distillery proved invaluable. His leadership guided the distillery through some of the most trying times of the 20th century, starting with Prohibition. Colonel Blantons savvy business acumen allowed bourbon production to continue during Prohibition, keeping the distillery operating when many others were closing their doors. When Prohibition ended in 1933, the nation was in the throes of the Great Depression. Again, Colonel Blantons leadership allowed the distillery to prevail during the lean times of the Depression. In 1937, the rising waters of the KY river engulfed the distillery. Remarkably within just 24 hours of the flood water receding Colonel Blanton restored the distillery to normal operations. A few years later, during World War II, Colonel Blantons gift for guidance kept the distillery intact at a time when it was required to suspend whiskey making and exclusively produce straight alcohol for military purposes.

Blantons Straight From The Barrel Review

BLANTON

Blantons Straight From The Barrel is exactly what its name indicates cask strength Blantons, which is already a single cask. Its the higher end offering of Blantons that Buffalo Trace ships overseas or sequesters in airport duty-free shops. Hows that for a nice how-do-you-do? Im glad I got to try it, but it irks me a bit when I see a release that would do amazing in the home market available anywhere but here.

Blanton’s Straight From The Barrel Bourbon

In 1984, Blanton’s was introduced as the world’s first single barrel bourbon. And variations of the legendary spirit have popped up occasionally since then, but almost never hear in the U.S. Straight From The Barrel is one of those variants, which puts the flavors of the bourbon on full display thanks to its unfiltered, uncut nature. It’s been on shelves overseas for years, but Buffalo Trace is finally rolling it out domestically this fall as a limited, annual release. SFTB is typically bottled in the 120 proof range in Blanton’s signature unique glass and finished with an iconic horse stopper.

The Seattle Spirits Society

Blanton’s Straight From The Barrel was tasted at Meeting No. 60 on July 25, 2017. Out of 5, we rated it exceptionally at 4.46. Blanton’s Straight From The Barrel ranks 2nd overall in Bourbon.

Rating Details

Hot nose. A little floral on the nose as well. Hits you right away, super strong flavors and hotness. Tingles. Added a couple drops of water and it is so much smoother and the flavor notes come through much stronger.

Puts hair on your chest but kinda like Jean DuJardin. The drink for an “artiste” or super spy. A few drops opens it up beautifully.

Blanton’s Straight From The Barrel Taste And Aftertaste

It all kicks off with dense, oily, and earthy caramel, caraway seed, ripe peach, dried apple and orange, roasted oak, cinnamon, clove, pumpernickel bread, and vanilla. I really didnt expect Blantons SFTB to be this earthy. The non-pick Blantons Red was fairly dry and earthy, but this is on a completely different level.

The ABV also starts to kick-in. Its not harsh, but certainly has its moments of being a lot to deal with because the intensity and incredible oiliness can be a little overwhelming at times. The flavors are also not what Id call nuanced because the earthy sweetness, caraway seed, and gingerbread are so prominent. I bet that it would open up with water.

Chewing just launches more oily and earthy caramel with pumpernickel, caraway seed, rye bread, dried apricot, dried prune, dry oak, cinnamon, gingersnap cookie, dried apple & orange, rosemary, and maybe even a little bit of dried seaweed . Theres a lot of gingersnap cookie , and sometimes I get prune that adds some nuance to the powerful earthy and savory flavors.

I also want to mention how oily it is Im talking EH Taylor Barrel Proof and George T Stagg level. I can feel that incredible viscosity, stickiness, and resulting dryness in my mouth. As a result of the oiliness and ABV, it can get a bit intense when I let it sit in my mouth for more than 2 seconds.
