Other regional beers are worth looking for. Aurochs Brewing Company is one of my personal favorites. Brewed out of the Pittsburgh area, but its fans are growing, so expect a wider distribution soon!

They also have a fan-favorite tasting room which I, for one, can not wait to visit!

A Maryland brew with a taproom and dedicated Gluten Free Brewhouse is BCBrewery. They currently ship within the state of Maryland and also to PA and VA. Sour, Blonde, IPA, Stout and Pale Ales made from millet, buckwheat, quinoa, and rice all naturally gluten free. Something else cool about BC Brewery? They also offer a selection of ciders, seltzers, and a NEW Beer/Wine Hybrid that are also naturally gluten free and are available on tap and in cans, crowlers or growlers.

Bierly Brewing Company out of Oregon makes IPA, Dubbel, Pilsner and Porter varieties, as well as seasonal flavors. Super delish and of course, naturally gluten free. Made from gluten free grains like sorghum, millet and rice.

Alt Brew naturally gluten free, distributed in the Madison and Milwaukee, Wisconsin areas. Taproom in Madison.

NEFF Brewing Company Tulsa, Oklahoma. Naturally gluten free craft beers made from artisan malts of millet, buckwheat, rice and quinoa. Their motto is delicious beers Brewed For Everyone. Dedicated gluten free facility with tap room and food menu.

Burning Brothers St. Paul, Minnesota. Tap room and available in St. Paul and Minneapolis area. Their motto is Gluten Free From Grain to Glass.

Beers Made Using Gluten

Omission Brewery: Out of San Diego, this brewery makes an IPA, pale ale, and lager that actually do meet the cut off for gluten-free but cant be labeled this way because of the way it is processed. It is made with a low protein-barley then treated with a proprietary process using an enzyme to help break down the gluten. You can even see the gluten-content test results for each batch on their website: omissionbeer.com. We taste-tested their IPA and it was a hit! As one taster said, If you didnt know you were drinking a gluten-free beer to begin with, you probably wouldnt know.

Brunehaut Amber: This organic Belgian Amber Pale Ale from Brasserie De Brunehaut is complex for a gluten-free beer with a caramel, smoky-sweet quality. It is brewed using barley and the gluten is extracted out to meet the gluten-free standards.

Vagabond Pale Ale: Vagabond is Scottish brewery Brewdogs first gluten-free beer. It is light-medium bodied, fruity and piney. It was brewed using 100% malted barley but meets the cut-off having less than 20 ppm gluten.

Saxon: Saxon is a lager made by Carlsberg Brewery of Sweden using barley, malt, and hops.

Great Frontier Brewing Co.: This brewery makes gluten-free, gluten-reduced, and traditional beers though theres not a lot of detail about their current beers out there right now. Their Blonde Annie did well at the 2011 National Home Brewing Competition and received a gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival.

Holidaily Buckwit Belgian Witbier

Holidaily BuckWit brews its Belgian Witbiers bucket with buckwheat, orange peel, coriander, and hops.

It has a 4.8% alcohol by volume and is 16 international bitterness units. The beer is unfiltered and has a cloudy appearance.

The BuckWit Belgian Witbier is one of my favorite beers on this list. I love the taste of buckwheat, which gives this beer a unique flavor.

The orange peel and coriander also add to the flavor and make this beer very refreshing.

I would recommend this beer to anyone, including those who want a gluten-free witbier. Dont forget to use the proper glass for this beer.

What Beer Ingredients Contain Gluten

There are four primary grains used for brewing beer. Each of the following has a unique strain of protein.

  • Wheat gliadin protein.
  • Barley hordein protein
  • Rye secalin protein

Gliadin, the protein in wheat, is the only one that current commercial tests can detect. The others cant be identified by regular testing. Consumption may lead to health problems for people who cant tolerate gluten.

A Celiac disease diagnosis led founder Matt DelVecchio, a hard-core homebrewer, to switch gears and start making gluten-reduced beer. His San Diego brewery sources locally produced honey to make this sweetly scented, dry-finishing beer, which earmarks a portion of proceeds to the Planet Bee Foundation.

    Founder Karen Hertzs Colorado brewery makes full-flavored, zero-gluten beers using native grains including millet and buckwheat. The latter stars in this citrusy witbier that scratches that Blue Moon itch, the grains nuttiness neatly integrated into the beer.

    Best Sour: Glutenberg Gose

    For more than a decade, Quebecs Glutenberg has been making gluten-free brews using locally produced grains such as millet, buckwheat, black rice and corn. But for this Canadian brewery, its not enough to just brew great gluten-free beers, the brewer is continually pushing the envelope with styles seldom seen sans gluten. Its refreshingly sour gose is made with a sprinkle of sea salt. With a slight pucker and dry finish, its true to style in every way.

    Grains Used For Gluten Free Beer:

    The most common among these choices is rice, but, like with any brewing process, it comes down to what is available to you in large amounts, and down to experimentation.

    You will have to brew and explore.

    Where it gets tricky to brew gluten free beer is in the malting.

    While you may be able to find grain, you may not always be able to find that grain malted.

    And malting is the key to extracting the sugar from the grain to get the yeast to ferment your beer.

    So it will take some research and dedication to find the right grain for you that is also malted.

    As someone with celiac disease or non-celiac gluten sensitivity , you need to steer clear of gluten in all forms. Often, the first time this issue comes up is when someone offers you a beer. Personally, I will reach for almost anything over a sorghum beer, but since they account for a significant portion of GF offerings, you might as well know which one to pick. The Celia Saison from Ipswich Brewery in Massachusetts is a solid choice. Belgian yeast leaves our girl Celia with a slightly spicy funk, which is balanced by the the tart citrus from the addition of orange peel in the brewing process.

    Ipswich Ale Brewery operates in Ipswich, Massachusetts, and opened for business in 1991.

    Ipswich Ale Brewery uses sorghum syrup, rice, and hops to brew the G Free Saison.

    It has a 4.5% alcohol by volume and is 30 international bitterness units. The beer is unfiltered and has a cloudy appearance.

    The G Free Saison from Ipswich Ale Brewery is an excellent choice for people who enjoy a Saison that tastes a bit sweet.

    The sorghum syrup and rice give this beer a nice flavor. I also like how hoppy this beer is. The hoppiness provides a refreshing aftertaste to each sip.

    Baking With Gluten Free Beer

    Whether or not drinking beer excites you, you should be thrilled that gluten free beers are finally available for us to use as cooking ingredients!

    Thats right beer bread, tempura, beer cake, and the always popular, beer-battered fish and chips! What would these be without beer? Not the same, I assure you!

    As far as my preferences go, I tend to use blond ales in my beer bread, tempura and beer batter recipes, and stouts like Greens Dubbel Dark or Groundbreaker Dark in my chocolate cake , and any lager or ale in my Salted Caramel Cupcakes, soups and soft pretzels.

    I prefer to drink the Greens Amber or Lager, Ghostfish Witbier, Glutenberg White or anything from Groundbreaker or Holidaily, depending on my mood and what foods it needs to complement!

    If you like sweeter beers or you just love honey, then you will love this one. Crazy-long name aside, Drink This Or The Bees Die by Duckfoot Brewing Co. is one of my favorites when Im looking for something warm and sweet. At 6.5% abv, its also pretty strong compared to some of the lighter gluten-free beers on the market.

    This golden honey ale has a sweet aroma, crisp flavor, and a soft palette thats guaranteed to appeal to anybody with a sweet tooth.

    Best Blonde Ale: Holidaily Blonde Ale

    • Tasting Notes: Hops, subtle malt, refreshing bitterness

    This beer is wildly unoffensive, according to Kay. HolidailyBlond Ale is a slightly malty brew with an equally restrained hop bitterness. If youre looking for a blond ale with a little more attitude, look for Aurochs coriander and orange peel-spiced take on the style. Its light and thirst quenching, but also interesting and flavorful, Kay says on her blog.

    Testing For Gluten How Reliable Is It

    Gluten Free Beer Taste Test!

    The most commonly used test for determining gluten content uses a technique called ELISA which uses antibodies to detect substances and has been considered the most specific and suitable test we have for detecting gluten. The ELISA using the R5 monoclonal antibody detects gluten/gliadin and similar proteins from related grains and has been considered the most reliable and the most popular method, though testing continues to evolve.

    Challenges with gluten testing including the complexity of gluten proteins, the changing consumer need as we continue to better understand the pathophysiology of celiac disease, and variations seen on testing methods currently available. Most breweries send samples of their beer out to external testing companies that use ELISA testing though test strips are commercially available. EZ-gluten for example uses what is called a lateral flow device technique in their at-home kits and claims to be sensitive to detect gluten as low as 10ppm. Still other test kits claim to be able to detect down to 3ppm. The FDA however states that scientifically validated testing methods do not reliably detect gluten less than 20ppm.

    Are these tests able to detect hordeins, the type of gluten found in barley?

    In summation, there are different ways to detect gluten in beer, none of which are both completely accurate and practical but we are getting closer all the time.

    Two Brothers Prairie Path Golden Ale

    Yes, this Chicago brewery was founded and built by two brothers who dedicated themselves to making the best gluten-free beers that taste like all the gluten is still there.

    The brewery remains family-owned to this day, so youre sure to find that good craft beer in every bottle!

    The Prairie Path has a nice creamy taste with touches of fruity notes, and it comes with a 5.1& ABV and moderate 25 IBUs.

    What Beers Are Gluten Free Comprehensive List Of Gluten Free Beers

    So I want to complete a gluten free beer list. In this guide, Im going to cover a few areas that concern us the most, such as taste, cost, and where we can get it! Im also going do write down any notes.

    The gluten free beers on this list are all beers that I have tasted personally and formed an opinion. Good, bad, or ugly Ill put down my thoughts here. What that means is the list is a living document. If I have not personally tried it, I wont review it. No company has paid me to review their gluten free beers and I plan on keeping it that way!

    What Is Gluten Reduced Or Omission Beers

    Generally speaking Gluten free beer is made with sorghum, millet, buckwheat or rice.

    There is however, a growing number of gluten free beers that initially follow the traditional ingrediants list and then are treated with enzymes to reduce their level of gluten below the required 5-ppm.

    Once these Omission Beers have gotten their levels of gluten below the necessary 5-ppm they are then given the CSAs recognition seal and deemed to be risk free for celiacs.

    One of the biggest benefits of this processing is that you end up with a more familiar tasting beer. The down side to this special processing, is that there is still a very small part of gluten left behind, which for those who are gluten intolerant may still cause you to feel sick if ingested.

    Because of this, I would advise you to exercise a bit of caution when trying any of the following brews as some celiacs have reported feeling a bit ill after imbibing.

    That said, These beers definitely open up the number of options available to those seeking a gluten free brew and can often times be quite a bit tastier!
