At least ten years old, the older version of Basil is roughly twice the price of the standard version. I believe that all of the information about this whiskey, from the recipe to the age, to the price, indicates that it should be extremely well made and affordable. At least since 2018, Basil Haydens 10 Year Bourbon has been available on the market, and it has been available for a few years already . The bottles are the same shape, but the labels have shifted from their previously worn-out appearance to more traditional sticker designs. Basil Haydens offering in this series is the most appealing one I have ever had, but I dont believe it makes a difference in the price. Despite the attractive nose, the lack of flavor delivery was a disappointment. This is a good option if you own it from the Barreled and Boxed program however, if you want, you can try it again in the summer.

The mash bill was originally issued in 1792 and matured for eight years. This isnt earth shattering, but its a significant step up from the bottom shelf.
Basil Haydens is one of four small batches of Beam bourbon made by Beam. In this mashbill, a high percentage of rye is present, as in the mashbill in Krob Creek. According to Jim Murray, this bourbon had a very weak 78/100 alcohol content.

Between another good Bookers release, the awesome Bookers 30th Anniversary and this Basil Haydens Bourbon 10 Years they really closed out 2018 with a bang. Kind of makes me wonder what treats they have up their sleeves for 2019. Or, maybe, theyre going to take it easy yeah, I dont believe that either.
If you didnt know it, heres my obligatory reminder that Basil Haydens is Old Grand-Dad in a fancier bottle. Its the same whiskey from the same distillery , but with the fancy label and a reduced proof typically youre getting less whiskey for more money. Though in this case, youre getting something unique, youre getting OGD aged for 10 years compared to the typical 4 aged for 2.5x longer than standard OGD, this is a bourbon review Im eager to get into.

Color: Orange-brown knowing the proof, I can only imagine the deep color this would have if it were bottled at a higher ABV.
On the nose: Earthy, slight citrus, honeysuckle, soda, sarsaparilla candy . So far, Im intrigued. Its been a while since I nosed a Basil Haydens, so I cant recall if this is a uniquely good nose or if thats normal for them.
In the mouth: This has a cool, refreshing note almost thirst-quenching. I get why someone would be happy with this, honestly. Theres a slight amount of oak, and a note of fruit that I feel like I may just be imagining. I could probably identify more notes, but they really drop off quickly frankly, Im not sure Im patient enough to search for them. The flavors are generally quite weak for me, but I acknowledge that I like big, punchy flavors that typically come from higher proof whiskeys. For someone else, this might be considered very smooth, which is something Ive heard before from Basil Haydens fans.
