Despite its name, the Wild Turkey barrels used to age this stout need to be hunted out a bit. A little wood and a little booze emerge at the start, though it’s ultimately lively and bright. What the barrel does here is offer a bit oomph to an otherwise solid base beer, bringing it up with a little body and depth. John Holl

Anderson Valley Brewing Company Wild Turkey Bourbon Barrel Stout

What the brewers say

Aged for three months in Wild Turkey Bourbon barrels, this luxurious stout has a deep ebony hue and a beautiful mahogany head. The woody, vanilla-like notes that the barrels imparat mingle with aromas of fresh baked bread, toffee, and espresso and envelop the rich chocolate and roasted barley flavors with a fine bourbon character.

What our panel thought

Aroma: Some nice roast and toast character. Bittersweet chocolate up front with some oatmeal notes, followed by a subtle coffee-roast note. Just a touch of sweetness, a little nutty, and strong vanilla. No esters or phenolics.

Flavor: Sweet chocolate and almost a milk creaminess. Some mild coffee flavor and dark malt sweetness and some dark cherry and almond notes. Creamy and not overwhelmingly roasty, almost with a soft espresso note. Oak character is subtle and hard to pick out, but lends a touch of vanilla to the flavor. The roastiness lasts on the tongue. Finish is mostly balanced, with a slight sweetness lingering in the end. Tannic character is very subdued. Hops bitterness is supportive.

Overall: A very delicious stout that doesn’t quite deliver as a barrel-aged offering. There is not enough barrel or oak character, but it is still tasty. The multi-layered malt profile keeps this beer interesting without becoming novel. The beer had some good sweet and roast qualities but was a little thin in the body. The creaminess reminds me a little of chocolate milk.

Anderson Valley Bourbon Barrel Stout Recipe

I’m newer to home brewing and looking to tackle this. It was absolutely amazing.

Could somebody help me out with the recipe? Is this the right place to ask?

Notes: The stout was very well balanced, with a strong and delayed aftertaste of vanilla. I have never brewed with vanilla or oats, so please be specific about how to handle that. I’m ok with neglecting the ‘Bourbon Barrel’ conditioning.

Thanks!

MALTS:Pale Two-Row, Crystal , Roasted Barley, Munich, Chocolate, Oats

I’ve had this beer many times and you picked a hell of a beer to clone.

To get the vanilla I recommend American Oak. American Oak has larger pores than French oak and it will transmit the flavors more quickly. Light or Medium toast will work. Take the oak cubes or chips and soak them in your favorite Bourbon for a week. Then put the whole thing into your carboy in secondary. That is where the vanilla will come from.

As far as Oats, flaked oats can go in with the rest of your grains. raw oats need to boil for an hour to gelatinize.

Cheers!

Anderson Valley Wild Turkey Barrel Aged Stout

Anderson Valley Brewing was founded in 1987, and is located in the bucolic Anderson Valley region of Mendocino County, California. They began as a humble 10-barrel brew house in the basement of their original brewpub, The Buckhorn Saloon. Then they were one of only 20 craft breweries in the United States, and are considered to be one of the pioneers of the craft beer industry. Since then they have expanded their brewery from the modest 10-barrels to their current 100- and 85- barrel copper brew kettles.

Being an environmentally friendly brewery, they consider the environment in all aspects of their process. They use water as efficiently as possible, give spent grain to local ranchers to use as a feed supplement, use spent hops as fertilizer, repurpose bourbon barrels, even their brew house is recycled from two closed breweries in Germany. And over 40% of their energy comes from solar power.

Anderson Valley and Wild Turkey have worked together on a variety of quality and authentic bourbon barrel-aged products. Anderson Valley Wild Turkey Bourbon Barrel Stout was once a draft-only product, taking their Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout and aging it for three months in Wild Turkey barrels. It is now available in 22 oz. bottles as part of an exclusive partnership between Anderson Valley Brewing Company and Wild Turkey Bourbon.

Bourbon Barrel Stout Anderson Valley

Bourbon barrel stout from Anderson Valley is a dark, rich beer with hints of bourbon, chocolate, and coffee. Its the perfect beer for a winter night, or any time you want a little something extra.

In recent years, a growing number of beer lovers have turned to wood-aged beers, especially bourbon barrel-aged beers. Anderson Valleys journey into barrel aging began in 2012. As part of their first act, they aged a batch of their popular Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout in barrels for three months. The flavors of oak vanilla and bourbon are both quite pleasant and controlled. As a result of its lighter body and barrel elements, it creates a beautiful mouthfeel. This ones recommended for those looking for a robust, complex flavor that isnt too heavily ABV while remaining within the ABV range.

The Unique Boontling Dialect: Origins And Learning Resources

Anderson Valley Bourbon Barrel Stout

To understand boontling, simply go to Boonville, California, a small town in Northern California. The name The Corners was adopted in the 1890s when the town was known as The Corner. Bregartes and Alonzo Kendall built hotels in 1864 and 1865, respectively. The town was later dubbed Kendalls City. W.W. Boone purchased the towns store and renamed it after himself. The term boontling is almost extinct, with only a few hundred people still using it. Now that one of the few remaining boontling classes is complete, the only way to learn it is to attend one of them. When defining dialects of English spoken in specific locations, such as dialects of Boston and Liverpool, an IANA subtag for boont is used. There are many idioms and expressions in boontling that are similar to those in English and Spanish. It is impossible to say when boontling first appeared, but it most likely occurred in the 1890s, when the town was known as The Corners. If youre interested in learning more about this unique dialect, the website Boonville.com has several articles on its history and how to properly pronounce it.
